Hidden Gems: Meet Anna Ready of Accrew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Ready.

Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After I had my son, I was looking for a job I could do from home. This was way before the pandemic when working from home was practically unheard of. I knew I wanted the flexibility to create my own schedule so I wouldn’t miss out on special moments with my family while still pursuing my own professional path. I found a course on starting your own bookkeeping business and that was it. Right before I had my daughter, I got my very first client! I felt like I was cheating at life that someone would pay me to do something I enjoyed and let me work when it worked for me. It’s wild that it’s been 14 years since then, and now I have the privilege of providing that opportunity for others. While our team has grown and our mission has broadened, the foundation of balancing doing excellent work and living a meaningful life has remained the same.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, although in general I’ve found that smooth roads don’t lead anywhere interesting. At each inflection point in the business – going from just myself to having a team, learning how to network, how to sell, how to set boundaries, how to fire a client or a team member – I’m constantly challenged to evaluate myself as a leader and the areas I need to develop in order to continue growing. And when I slow down, I can see that every problem presents an opportunity to do something better, or differently, or stop doing something that isn’t working. And every collaborator brings a new perspective to the table that broadens the way I think about what we’re doing and where we’re going. I’ve learned so much from the things I’ve done well and so much more from the things I’ve done really, really poorly. It’s all part of the joy in the journey, which I constantly remind myself when I’m in the middle of putting out a dumpster fire.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Accrew, we leverage smart systems and even smarter people to simplify keeping track of business finances. Our services allow clients to focus on running their business and let us focus on doing their bookkeeping. We know that each client’s needs are as unique as their company, and there isn’t a cookie-cutter approach that works for every organization. So we tailor our services to fit the needs of our clients and are invested in helping them succeed. When our clients win, we win! One of the things that set us apart is our sales process where we evaluate whether we would be a good fit to work with a potential client and provide them with another referral if not. We see ourselves as partners with our clients, so we want to ensure we are the best solution to meet their needs and that they have a fantastic experience working with us.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always had a mind of my own. Being the youngest of three with two older brothers, I kinda had to get in there with my thoughts because no one was necessarily opening the door for me. But my parents were really encouraging that with hard work, I could really do anything I wanted to do. Personality-wise, I was definitely on the nerdy side; I was a big reader and wore glasses… basically a slightly less cute Hermione. While I loved reading, I also played soccer, softball, and swam, too. As I got older, the hobby that displaced all the others was theatre. I was in shows in high school and a traveling theatre group, which was such a fun and formative experience. Looking back at each milestone and hobby, I can see how impactful the friendships, mentors, and experiences were in shaping the person I am and the way I navigate the world and business.
