Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Brown.
Hi Valerie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in both the US and in China in the late 1990s. I graduated in 2000 and began practicing acupuncture in Atlanta, GA. I relocated to Los Angeles and changed my concept to Community Acupuncture which enabled many people who previously could not access acupuncture to receive regular treatments. This is because acupuncture is typically cost-prohibitive for many who don’t have health insurance plans which cover acupuncture. My clinic, Eagle Rock Community Acupuncture, has been a fixture in our community for close to 15 years. Why strive to treat as many patients as we can. We also carry Chinese herbal remedies as well as other supplements.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Probably our biggest obstacle appeared in 2020 when the Pandemic dictated social distancing, and there was so much confusion about what was safe to do. Many people opted out of healthcare at that time. We remained busy because people were still suffering from headaches, neck pain, etc. The clinic adapted with more space between the chairs, masking, and other measures to ensure that we maintained adequate space around each other.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Eagle Rock Community Acupuncture ?
The clinic was established in 2009. When we first opened, we had volunteers helping with the front desk and accepted many donations in the form of furniture and decor. I had never felt so welcomed before when opening other businesses in the past. I think Eagle Rock was eager for affordable acupuncture at a time when healthcare costs were (and still are!) so outrageously expensive. We believe that being able to tend to your health on a regular basis is the key to recovery. We educate our patients about how to use acupuncture and teach them about ways they can take care of themselves. We meet the patients where they are at in their wellness journey and aim to provide relief and well-being. I see our treatment as an oasis where people can unplug and relax together….that, alone, is healing.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
People can walk by your place of business for a decade before they actually come in and receive services. I need to keep announcing what I do and hope that the word gets out.
