Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomi’ Miller. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Tomi’ and Rene are a mother and daughter team who share a passion for people and coffee. Purchasing the business over four years ago they have focused on building community, getting to know the tourists and serving quality products. With a “Cheers” like atmosphere, they focus on getting to know who they are serving and also connecting people. They roast onsite and are in over 26 Whole Foods locations across California.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Owning a small business is never a smooth road. Most bumps are manageable, but Covid hit really hard. Like many businesses it was a case of sink or swim. We had to adapt and accept the new reality. I think what we struggled with was wearing a mask for 10 hours a day and missing seeing the smiles of our customers underneath their masks.
As you know, we’re big fans of Laguna Coffee Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
There is no real ‘secret’ to our success, it’s really just a question of focusing on what matters – quality, service, and community. In addition to the cafe, we are also a micro-roaster and all of our beans are roasted onsite. We have consistently been awarded ‘Best Coffee in Orange County’ and ‘Best Coffee in Laguna Beach’. Laguna Coffee is now available in over 26 Whole Foods locations across California.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Owning a cafe is a lot of hard work (as well as a lot of fun). Make sure you’re ready to commit the time, assemble an awesome team, stay focussed on the big picture, and do the things that stir your passion. For me, that has been working with small local producers in California.
