Today we’d like to introduce you to Shatoya Patterson.
Hi Shatoya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am 38 years old, a mother of a 12 years old name Surri Davis who has inspired me more than she will ever know. I was raised in Compton, California I consider my life to be the average story which comes with ups and downs but what makes me unique is my ability to overcome obstacles. I graduated high school in 2001 and went to Cal State Long Beach but didn’t continue because I wasn’t motivated and wanted to chase money. Once I had my daughter in 2011, I decided to attend nursing school and fell in love with nursing which I never seen coming. I have been a LVN for ten years and have loved every minute of it. Due to the recent pandemic nursing has changed so much and I had to readjust which took a toll on me mentally, I desired a new challenge that would bring relief and relaxation. The candle company Bright Lights was ignited. Coping with daily stressors that are encountered as a healthcare worker, I try to use nonpharmacologic interventions, which is one of the most popular relaxation techniques. I researched different relaxing scents and started making candles to use while I mediated and slept. The aromatherapy decreased my anxiety as well as my daughters, I wanted to share this experience and healthy coping strategy with others and that’s how Bright Lights was born October 2020.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has not been smooth but I do believe in God so I believe that everything happens in God’s timing. As I mentioned, I didn’t graduate from Cal State Long Beach and I never planned to be a nurse but as we see God had other plans for me, I wanted to be a buyer for a department store. I have since received my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration and more recently, my MBA in May of 2021. So I am living proof that anything is possible, I am a single mom, have a full-time job, and now own a business so with the right support and God you can do anything.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bright Lights Candle Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bright Light Candle Company is a web-based. Candles are hand-poured with soy wax. This company was created to help people take a moment to live in them and scents are used to elicit emotional responses. As a nurse, I have dealt with patients, coworkers, and family members that have dealt with mental health issues so I wanted to create a non pharmacological methods to deal with their emotions. I don’t only have candles that cater to emotional health, I have a huge variety to meet the needs of everyone who love candles. I create custom candles for events like baby showers, birthday parties and weddings to stand apart from other companies.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is a smile on my daughter’s face knowing that she can live life to her full potential, also helping others. This helps me feel like I am walking in my purpose that I am fulling my obligation to God which has created this path for me to walk.
