Meet the Founder & CEO of Zapata Cannabis Co. Her name is Roni Solis Melton, Afro Mexican descent. Age 27. She started the Cannabis company in 2021 with the idea of breaking the stigma of “Mexican dirt weed”. She alone has been in the cannabis industry for about ten years helping out brands/dispensaries alike to succeed in the business. Using her own knowledge and no investment capital. She went out and started her brand Zapata Cannabis CO and managed to get into stores throughout Southern California within the first year. She continues to beat the odds and is expanding more and getting Zapata nationwide and more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Defiantly has not been a smooth road at all. From the jump I was faced adversity because I am a young, a woman, black, I have dealt with sexism, toxic masculinity and intimidation, sabotage in the cannabis industry. To having our social media being banned constantly. Even people stealing ideas and stealing bits of my story trying to spin it too as their own. Also had people say, I was not Mexican enough to represent a brand that highlights Mexican revolutionary heroes. And People mostly Men in the cannabis industry who seem to think that I could not hold my own in the business, who would try to exclude me from being in the industry,

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is when the summer of 2012 I was going into senior year of high school, and I finally had the best summer of my life. I met two people who changed my life and showed me what sisterhood and what friendship should be, I went to college parties, had a lot of firsts and that was the summer I was introduced to marijuana.
