Exploring Life & Business with Reg The Master Barber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reg The Master Barber.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out as a teenager with no direction just hanging out. Growing up, we would cut each other’s hair in the neighborhood. Once I had my daughter, I had to figure out how I would make money. I knew I didn’t want to work for anybody and college was not on my radar. My mother suggested barbering school. I enrolled in barber school and barbering became my passion. I cut hair in Harlem and all throughout Queens. I would work from morning to morning. I opened my first shop in 1999 in Lefrack City Queens. I owned that barbershop until 2004. After owning my shop, I realized I would rather pay booth rent and not have to be responsible for all the overhead of being an owner. I worked in many shops thru out Queens after that. In 2012, I decided to leave barbering when I got a job with the city driving buses for the MTA. That was probably one of the worst decisions I could’ve made. I was there for six years when I decided I was not gonna drive the bus any longer.

At first, I had no idea what I would do. I started going back and forth to LA to visit family and that’s when it dawned on me that I should just start barbering again. I asked my cousin to take me to a hip barbershop and I landed up at Legends the barbershop. I introduced myself to the owner and asked if he would allow me to work in his shop a week at a time so I could see if I could make a living. The owner agreed and my next visit to LA, I set up shop. I went back and forth a few times and things really went well so I decided to relocate Dec. 31, 2018. I returned home after my last visit to LA sold all my belongings and made the move. Since being in LA, I have worked with some celebrity clients and I have worked on a few production sets. I am building a solid clientele base and I am continuing to grow in the career of barbering.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been pretty smooth. I’m used to the ups and downs of barbering so I have not had a problems readjusting to any obstacles I may have had.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I work in a barbershop and I also offer mobile barbering services. I specialize in fading. The fact that I take my time in attempt to perfect each cut is what sets me apart from others. I am proud to have added a skincare line to my brand I call it Reg Men’s Skin Care.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am open to working with people. I have collaborated with braiders in the past where the client needed braids on top and the sides faded.
