Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Norris Dorsey
Hi Dr. Norris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles, I am the first in my family to receive a doctorate degree. I played all major sports growing up and fell in love with basketball. Currently, I am an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Los Angeles Mission and Los Angeles Pierce Colleges. I also hold the title of Managing Partner/Chief Strategy Officer at Gridiron Enterprise Management Group Inc.
My research interest focuses on the study of minority leaders in nonprofit organizations and identifying success stories using the value leadership model. I have extensive expertise in business, entrepreneurship, and organizational leadership which combines the art of leadership and the science of management with the aim of guiding an organization.
I earned a B.S. degree in Management and an MBA and Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne in Southern California. I am the founder and CEO of Dorsey Academy of Entrepreneurs (Est. 2014), a nonprofit organization that has educated more than 1,300 students around the world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
An important challenge I faced was when I got in trouble with the law and ended up in jail. I was laying in bed behind bars crying one night and suddenly realized I was just like my dad, John Lee, who was a habitual criminal. In 1989 he got a natural life sentence under Nancy Regan’s three strikes law.
At that moment, I realized I had a choice to be better and was at a crossroad in my life. I decided to use my brain for good instead of bad. I decided to be a positive role model for other young men who were growing up without a father in the home. I wanted to help young people with their decision-making skills.
I started teaching to make a difference in the lives of younger people.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our Motto is: “Start your business and business classes simultaneously.”
The purpose of the Dorsey Academy of Entrepreneurs is to deliver affordable education to individuals who want to be entrepreneurs. I wanted to provide students access to the information at an affordable cost.
How do you think about luck?
Somehow, at the age of 29, I fell into the teaching field. I knew that I wanted to influence young lives, but I never imagined myself as a college professor.
