Exploring Life & Business with Millie Montgomery of The Stable Mind Mental Health Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Millie Montgomery.

Hi Millie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always knew I would be in the helping field but I didn’t always know I wanted to be a therapist. I began my career as a case manager for an outpatient mental health agency. After a few years there, I felt unfulfilled and decided to go back to acquire my Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of New England. I was 2 months postpartum with my first child and to say it was quite the challenge, during such a milestone in my life, would be an understatement. I have always been interested in the why behind people’s choices and behaviors and interning at a community mental health center, working mostly with trauma survivors and adolescents shaped my approach to therapy—it taught me how powerful it can be just to hold space for someone.

After graduating, I clocked thousands of supervised hours toward licensure while juggling personal responsibilities. It wasn’t glamorous, but it gave me exposure to a variety of therapeutic modalities and populations. Eventually, I passed the licensure exam and opened a small part-time private practice in 2022, The Stable Mental Health Services. It started with just a few clients a week, and over time it has grown.
Today, I specialize in anxiety, life transitions, and relational issues. I love working with new mothers in the perinatal mental health space and I am also certified in infant massage, which encourages bonding and attachment between caregiver and their infants.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has certainly been pebbled, though never impossible. As previously mentioned, pursuing graduate school while raising an infant son was both a profound challenge and a true testament to resilience. There were many moments where I questioned the path I was on, but the work I did with clients—and witnessing their personal growth—kept me grounded and motivated. I’ve never been one to take no for an answer, and my determination has carried me through.

While those early days are now behind me, I still experience moments of self-doubt from time to time, along with imposter syndrome—especially as I stepped into the new and vulnerable space of building my own private practice. Undoubtedly, the support of my close friends and partner has been instrumental in helping me stay grounded and continue forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Stable Mind Mental Health Services is a space where you can truly be yourself—free of judgment or assumptions. I am intentional about creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for every client who walks through my (virtual) door. My goal is for each person to feel seen, heard, supported, and understood.

What I love most about my work is the privilege of sitting with clients from all walks of life and learning about their unique experiences, stories, and strengths. My approach isn’t just about improving mental health; it’s about cultivating a lasting sense of stability, self-efficacy, and peace—and doing so with a bit of joy along the way. Therapy should also feel enriching, even fun, and something clients look forward to as part of their personal growth journey.

My services include individual therapy, crisis intervention, and parent coaching, all tailored to meet each client’s specific needs. I currently offer virtual sessions to ensure accessibility and flexibility for clients with varying schedules and lifestyles.

What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come—personally and professionally—and the gift I’ve discovered in being able to support others in their healing. What sets me apart is who I am: how I show up for my clients with authenticity, honesty, and compassion—sprinkled with a little candor and warmth. I believe in building real, human connections that foster trust, growth, and lasting change.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious and inquisitive—filled with questions and a deep desire to take in everything around me. I found wonder in the smallest details and was constantly drawn to understanding people, emotions, and the world we live in. That natural curiosity shaped not only how I saw the world, but also how I connected with others.

It’s no surprise that I eventually found my way into this career path. Becoming a therapist felt like a natural extension of who I’ve always been—someone deeply interested in human experience, who values meaningful connection, and who believes in the power of healing through understanding and compassion.
