Today we’d like to introduce you to Mengting Hou
Hi Mengting, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always believed that education is the key to unlocking opportunities, breaking barriers, and expanding our world. My journey has been one of resilience, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.
Growing up in northeastern China, I was the only child in a humble family. My parents did everything they could to provide for me, despite limited resources. From an early age, I understood that education was my gateway to a better future. I dedicated myself to academic excellence, pushing myself to master every subject.
At 11 years old, I faced one of my biggest challenges—learning English. Without access to the internet, color TV, or sufficient study materials, I had to memorize and recite entire textbooks to retain knowledge. It was a constant cycle of learning, forgetting, and relearning. But I never gave up. Eventually, English became my strongest subject, and I went on to teach thousands of students as a lecturer during my time at a law school in Beijing.
During that time, I founded and ran two profitable e-commerce businesses, and worked as a TV show director. However, I still felt unfulfilled. I knew there was more I needed to explore, so in 2015, I left everything behind and moved to the United States.
My journey of education did not stop there. I expanded my studies beyond law into music business and finance, eventually earning my CFA charter in 2023. Now, I plan to further my legal education in the U.S., reinforcing my belief that learning is a lifelong process.
Inspired by my own struggles with language learning, I founded The Mimir, an AI-driven speech-centric language learning platform. The goal is to help others overcome the same barriers I faced, making language mastery accessible, engaging, and effective for everyone.
Education, at its core, comes from the Latin root “educo,” meaning to induce, draw out, or develop from within. Learning is not about filling a person with knowledge—it is about unlocking their potential.
As J.P. Morgan once said:
“Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll be able to see farther.”
From a determined child in northeastern China to an entrepreneur in the U.S., I have lived by this principle.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth. From childhood hardships to professional and entrepreneurial challenges, every stage of my journey has tested my resilience.
As mentioned above, one of my biggest struggles was learning English as a child. Without access to proper learning resources, I had to create my own rigorous study system. I forced myself to memorize and recite full textbooks, struggling with retention and practice. However, that experience taught me an invaluable lesson: consistency and persistence can break any barrier.
As an entrepreneur, transitioning from e-commerce and media into education technology was not easy. When I founded The Mimir, I faced challenges in funding, market penetration, and developing AI-driven learning models that could truly improve language acquisition. Traditional language learning apps focus on isolated skills like vocabulary or reading, but I wanted to create a holistic, speech-centric approach. This required continuous innovation, extensive research, and the integration of cutting-edge AI technology.
Securing partnerships with school districts and universities also required immense effort. Convincing institutions to adopt new technology in education is never simple. However, by showing efficacy, demonstrating measurable fluency gains and proving the effectiveness of AI-driven conversation-based learning, we have successfully partnered with leading educational institutions and multiple public school districts.
Despite the challenges, I remain committed to my mission: expanding language access for all, regardless of socioeconomic background.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Mimir: Language Acquisition for Next-Gen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Mimir is not just another language learning app—it is a game-changer in the field of education technology.
We recognized a major gap in traditional language learning: people memorize words and sentences but struggle to hold real conversations. Traditional language resources often become outdated quickly, leaving teachers with the ongoing challenge of creating their own teaching materials. Meanwhile, students struggle to find engaging, relevant content that makes learning enjoyable. Without access to effective tools or sufficient support from schools and parents, mastering a language becomes even more difficult. Most apps and programs focus on either vocabulary, reading, or writing, but none provide a complete learning cycle that leads to fluency. The Mimir was created to remove pain for teachers and students by combining interesting contemporary content, AI technology, peer interaction, and a speech-centric approach.
Here’s what sets us apart:
Speech-Centric Learning: We emphasize real conversation practice. Our platform allows learners to choose topics, watch relevant content, and engage in verbal discussions with peers.
AI-Driven Personalization: We use LLM (Large Language Models) and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) algorithms to provide users with tailored learning paths.
Community-Based Learning: Learners can form study groups and engage in collaborative learning, fostering a foreign language environment.
Real-Time Performance Tracking: Our platform evaluates speaking abilities, vocabulary retention, and engagement metrics to personalize the learning experience.
Our mission is to revolutionize language education by making it accessible, effective, and engaging for everyone. We want to ensure that no matter where you come from—rich or poor—you have the opportunity to learn a new language and expand your world.
After Mandarin, in May 2024, we launched our Spanish program, with English to follow in 2025.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a child, I was incredibly disciplined, curious, and driven. I took academics seriously, not because I was forced to, but because I saw education as my gateway to a better future.
I was the teacher’s pet, always at the top of my class, spending countless nights studying with the singular goal of getting into one of China’s top universities. My love for learning was coupled with a strong sense of determination—once I committed to something, I gave it my all.
Despite the hardships my family faced, my parents always showered me with love and trust. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to push through obstacles without fear. I have always believed that only death can stop me from running further. This mentality has fueled everything I have done, from excelling in school to launching different businesses to moving to the U.S. alone in pursuit of a bigger dream.
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, whether it was running successful e-commerce businesses or now pioneering a revolution in language education. The idea of building something that can benefit lives has always driven me.
