Exploring Life & Business with Melissa Lekus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lekus.

Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I became a licensed esthetician in 2007. I have worked in a series of boutique spas, and luxury hotel spas, as well as worked as an ambassador for a high-end product line. I have had the opportunity to give facials to celebrities, foreign dignitaries, teens as well as mere mortals like you and me.

After 12 years of providing hands-on treatments, I realized I wanted to be my own boss. I saw a need from people asking for help sorting out what products they should be using for their skin as well as how and when to use them.

So I created a Skincare Coaching Program. My clients’ greatest pain point was the confusion and overwhelm of figuring out the right skincare routine for their skin.

I wanted to help them achieve glowing skin within the parameters of the time they are willing to dedicate to their skin and how much they are comfortable spending on their products. So I created a Virtual Coaching Program with step-by-step instructions for their skincare routine that is accompanied by an easy-to-follow Roadmap that keeps them focused and on track.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is always challenging, especially when you are a solo practitioner. The biggest challenge is imposter syndrome and that voice in the back of your head telling you your idea won’t work. Once you can quiet that voice, the next challenge is creating the right marketing strategy to reach one’s ideal client. It can be daunting in this noisy space of skincare and the social media sphere. It can be frustrating and discouraging but when you know you have something to offer that is unique and will really be helpful, your perseverance will overshadow that doubting voice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I provide a coaching service, just like a trainer for the gym or a life coach. As a coach, I will create a clear and achievable plan as well as give support and accountability to help realize my client’s skincare goals.

I know skincare can be confusing. We get a lot of conflicting information. There is social pressure to look a certain way, there is advertising telling us we must do and be more/better, we compare ourselves to people we see on social media and then there are our friends telling us what products they used on their skin. Listen, not all products are for all people.

Plus there are SO many products to choose from.

My goal, as a skincare coach, is to simplify all of that for my clients. There are other estheticians that offer skincare consults but generally, those consults are geared toward selling a particular product line. I am not interested in selling products but rather in guiding people to use products that will help their specific skincare concerns and condition.

During my coaching session, I do a deep dive with my clients and really get to know them. I wanted to know their skincare concerns, how much time and energy they are interested in investing in a daily routine, how many products they are comfortable using, how much they are willing to spend on their products, and where they like to shop for skincare.

I then tailor an easy-to-follow step-by-step plan. We start by using the products that my clients have already invested in. I want those products to get used, no reason to have a pile of products just cluttering up your bathroom. Although it is possible I may recommend a product or two at the beginning to round out a successful routine, and then as products get finished we can build from there.

I want to educate my clients so they feel confident when purchasing and trying new products. I want them to understand how to decide when to rotate different products so that eventually they only need me when they want to discuss new and exciting products they have come across when shopping.

I love helping people feel good about their skin. When they understand their skincare, they are more likely to use it. Consistent use of the right skincare products will have people asking YOU, how do you get that gorgeous glow?

What were you like growing up?
I have always been a deeply loyal and protective friend. As a kid, I wasn’t a loner but I didn’t have a “group” of friends. I had many friends that I liked to spend time with one on one. That has never changed. I think that’s why I like working with people 1:1. I am incredibly interested in knowing what makes people tick, why they do what they do, and what the mental process was that got them there. As a person that feels protective of people, I want to be the positive voice for people to offset all the negativity we often tell ourselves. Although I was never a cheerleader, I am definitely a big rah-rah as an adult and truly believe in each individual’s potential for success. We don’t navigate this world alone so if I can help even one person feel better about themselves then I feel like I have made difference.
