Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Knight
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Knight Cap is a restaurant and bar located in the heart of Old Town Monrovia. Opened in September of 2022 by wife and husband, Melissa and Matthew Knight. Having just been married in June of 2022, we opened the restaurant 3 months later and haven’t looked back. Having worked in the service industry for a combined 16 years, we have dreamt of curating a location of our own where the product, community and culture is genuine and purposeful. Stemming from Melissa’s family background Knight Cap offers fresh Mexican food that is always made to order. House made chips and salsa, hand crafted Margaritas, and birria tacos are a few of our most popular items. We want our customers to feel the authenticity in both our product and our service. We enjoy building relationships with our customers who become friends, and these friends become our Knight Cap community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One challenge we have faced has been the lack of experience as business owners. Knight Cap being our first business has offered us the opportunity to learn a vast amount about the hours it takes to run a business successfully. We have loads of support from family and friends which we are grateful to have. Whether they are simply telling people about the restaurant or helping us paint and build furniture before we even opened. They have been a major help in keeping us motivated and inspired to continue to chase our dream of establishing a place where people feel at home. We are continuously learning and adapting to the challenges presented and we have failed on many fronts. However big or small those failures are, they are opportunities for growth. Experience is only gained through these moments, and we will continue to persevere with the same positive mentality that we began this journey with.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
From the crisis we learned how to be creative. We worked throughout the pandemic and post-pandemic at a different bar. That experience helped us develop the confidence and belief that we could open Knight Cap. Fast forward 2 years and we are here now building our future one day at a time.
