Exploring Life & Business with Matthew Preece

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Preece.

Matthew Preece

Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out my career in England working with a sensational group of stylists in London it was an exceptional Salon with a strong work ethic that was built into my training and has stayed with me ever since. Obviously, I bought these standards with me across the pond. Originally I worked at Giuseppe Franco in Beverly Hills, then I went to Fred Segal Beauty after that, I was at Chrissmcmillan Salon in Beverly Hills, and FRED SEGAL himself called me and asked me if I would resurrect FRED SEGAL SALON after it had closed its doors, and that’s how I became an owner.

I had FRED SEGAL SALON for about ten years; it was a very successful company and was very exciting working under the Fred Segal umbrella altogether for about 16 years, however when FRED SEGAL on the west side closed its doors, I had no choice but to move the operations to a different location and decided at that time to call the new salon Matthew Preece Salon a great bonus was that all the stylist came with me so it was a lot easier to get up and running. Of course, there are many benefits to owning your own salon, especially with one that carries the prestige of the Fred Segal brand but also a lot of responsibility! Of course, there is a balance in everything we do the highs go side-by-side with the lows; on the upside, you had a hands-on experience the camaraderie with the team, the nurturing, the guiding, and most of all, what is super important to me is the connection!

I love the experience that I have with my clients I love the experience I have with my team. I created Matthew Preece products with my friend Linda Chae who created an amazing company called Chae Organics. I was actually at a spiritual event with a movement I work with and represent called Ekam Oneness I was introduced to Linda at this event, and we hit it off straight away I told her that I was looking to create a product around this tree called the baobab tree the tree of life it’s one of Earths ancient trees very popular in Africa with more scattered in responsibility places around the world and also its a highly revered with mystic meanings in India. Linda was really pleased that I mentioned this tree as she happened to be working on a serum blow-dry serum using a mixture of ingredients including the Baobab. So I decided to take a trip to Colorado to visit her factory in Colorado she was so gracious I stayed at her house and guided a Meditation for her staff. Then, began creating a product line.

I also regularly practice and guide meditations I offer online classes on Zoom and I’m part of a group out of India called Ekam Oneness I travel to India every year, and literally I am that guy that goes up to the mountains and meditates with monks. it’s a fantastic school of transformation basically from any internal conflict that you might be feeling about anything in your life and gives you the tools to be able to get out of that feeling and into a more peaceful place a more peaceful state of mind we have many transcendental experiences when we go there. I also work with the Kosmik band and create meditation music and produce music, so I guess I’m a busy lad.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle is actually coming to the US from a different country from a different culture, specifically a different work culture I spent a lot of time struggling when I first got here I had no money and no license, so I got turned away from a handful of salons. It took a long time for me to build my clientele and to start really making a difference financially in my life. When I first got here, I must admit I was affected by all the glitz and glamour by all the celebrity friends, all the late-night parties, all the VIP list etc. I think straight off the bat, I was hanging around in that crowd and after time, I began to realize that working with a hangover every day was not going to get me too far in my career. So I focussed on building a clientele and never really looked back. Of course there were plenty of ups and downs along the way.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I think if you have a dream, then just go for it the most important relationship is the one you have with yourself! After all, that determines your state and then affects the relationships you have with the people around you. If you are in a calm place, your reactions to situations will be from a more expanded consciousness if you are in a loving state, then your reactions will be from a loving place. Obviously, if you are in a hateful state or an angry state, a self-obsessed state, your reaction to any given situation it’s gonna be different. So for me, it’s really important to define balance in my life. Meditation yoga music, nurturing a connection with those around me and also with myself. Practice doesn’t often make perfect but it certainly helps.
