Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathew Verderosa.
Hi Mathew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was playing drums in a Gypsy Punk Cabaret band. We were offered to do a tour across the country on a train. I asked if there was going to be a house kit at the venues we would be playing at. I was told no and I had to bring my own drums. I went to bed that night and had a dream that I had my entire drum set on a cart and was pulling it off the train. One of the drum cases fell off the cart and back into the train car. The doors closed and the train left with my drum. I instantly woke up at 5am on Dec 5th, 2012. I started making drawings of concepts and by the next morning, I was building my first prototype of the Beatbox concept. It was made of a trunk from K-mart and a cheap kids drum set.
Unfortunately, I never got to go on that train tour. I had to quit the band to pursue Beatbox.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first thing I will say is there is a huge difference between being an Inventor and being a businessman.
I was pretty much reinventing the wheel so 90% of my parts had to either be custom made or fabricated from other parts. It took 3 1/2 years to fully develop my first full prototype.
My first trade show I went to, I had enough to make it there and for the Air BnB. So after working the booth for an entire day at a trade show, I would take my Beatbox™ and go out busking to make money to eat. It took an extra three days after the trade show to make enough money in gas to get home.
I got ripped off for 10k for an unsecure website.
Had a mass production deal in the works, then the Covid pandemic happened and I ended up homeless.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The beatbox™ is the first high-end, compact kit of its kind. We offer a never before seen, self-storing drum kit. All the drums, hardware, throne, and rug fit into the kit. It comes fully equipped with heavy-duty casters and an extendable luggage-style handle for transport. Our motto is “don’t sacrifice sound for size” and we mean it. Take a seat and play, you will be astounded by the quality of this travel-ready kit.
We grew tired of drum kits lacking overall quality with sub-par drum heads and hardware. We refuse to give you a product that we don’t feel is show-ready the day you get it.
We may look different than other drums on the market, but we stand behind our hard work and passion. We’re changing the drum industry one set at a time.
I am most proud of being able to donate a total of 24 Beatboxes to charities and nonprofits helping with children’s music education and after-school programs. My goal is to get music back into schools. I have created a concept for a children’s tv show that will teach music theory. The main character is Beatrice the beatbox.
