Exploring Life & Business with Lydia Gomez of Birdie Learning Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Gomez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my late teens, I became highly interested in learning about starting a business. I researched and read countless articles, I followed people who had become successful starting a business and spent so many hours on YouTube learning about different aspects of the business.

Finally, I attempted to start small businesses centered in fashion and accessories which did not work out. From those experiences coupled by all the research I learned so much about what had worked, what didn’t work, and a few key aspects of myself that contributed to the reason why those ideas did not work out.

Throughout my college years, I worked part-time and full-time jobs. As I was nearing the finish line toward my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, I started asking myself those difficult “purpose” questions. I noticed that in all the jobs I had where I felt the most happy and fulfilled when I was working with kids.

During the summer of 2020, I found myself in a situation where a job opportunity had fallen through and I found myself jobless. It was stressful as I attempted to find a position in education. Seeing as at that moment, I was not being contacted for a position, I decided to create my own.

At this point, I was more confident in my abilities as a teacher and I just wanted to help. Most importantly to TEACH. I decided this would be the service I would offer in what comes most natural to me, teaching.

This is how Birdie Learning Academy was born. I am thankful to the families that trust me with their child’s educational needs. I love what I do because I don’t just get to teach, I also get to be creative and learn new skills that I never thought I would be learning.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. There are so many ups and downs, but I think at some point you realize that it’s part of the journey. Being a first-generation Latina, I do not necessarily have direct access to people who have started a business which leaves me spinning my brain wheels most of the time. As challenges present themselves, they take me a while to resolve each time. I figure them out as I go and I try to take wiser steps as I learn from them. I’ve learned that I need to ask for help and seek help when I need it.

I still read and watch videos to learn from others who are further along in their business journey. I find it motivating and highly educational.

I have overcome challenges by continuing to stay on this path even when I am scared, nervous, insecure, inpatient and confused, lol! Sometimes that’s the most challenging thing to do, stick with it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Birdie Learning Academy is an online academic service to 1.) enhance a child’s math skills by closing knowledge gaps and 2.) support homeschool families by facilitating and preparing their homeschooling lessons.

We specialize in building and strengthening foundational early math topics and close knowledge gaps to achieve long-term and sustainable math proficiency.

Birdie Learning Academy is unique from other tutoring services in that we follow our proprietary, Proactive Tutoring Model approach. This is a learning approach that centers on locating and addressing knowledge gaps via tailored based instruction. We focus on strengthening math’s foundational building blocks and create a safe environment to form a student-peers-instructor kinship that fuels learning.

This is one aspect of our brand that we are most proud of. We accomplish our Proactive Tutoring Model approach through four steps. 1. Assessment – learning plan 2. Learning platforms – cementing skills and independent study 3. Structured lessons – lecture with educator/HW help/parent updates 4. HW Club (bonus) – building community.

I would like the world to know that Birdie Learning Academy is striving to build a sustainable and ethically fair company. Our mission is to: Make the most positive, LONG-TERM impact in a child’s education, Make Math learning a sustainable process for the parent and child, Provide a safe, positive and encouraging learning environment for students, and Promote inclusivity, creativity and curiosity to everyday learning.

Lastly, we would like to let parents know that we have few available spots available. We offer an online consultation (free 🙂 ) for us to chat about your child’s needs.

I’d like to invite the readers to come say “hola!” on Instagram (@birdielearningacademy) and let us know if you’re watching House of the Dragon! 🙂

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One important lesson that I’ve learned so far is the importance of seeking help. That’s what I learned early on from previous failed attempts at starting a business. There’s only so much you can do on your own. If you’re like me and have limited resources, then chances are you will need more guidance, so it’s part of our job (as a business owner) to seek it out and find it. So, seek help, have patience and find at least one or two other people who are in the same path as you. These things are super helpful.
