Exploring Life & Business with Kimberly Marran of Pure Smiles South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Marran.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was raised in Orange County and attended UCLA where I majored in Bio-Chemistry. I went to NYU where I received my Doctor of Dental Surgery.

I worked in children’s dentistry for 10 years, before I opening my own practice.

When I became pregnant with their my first child, I began to think about the overall effect the dental materials used in a child’s mouth could have on their health. Also, how the health of a child’s mouth could effect their entire body. I became a research junkie trying to find the best way to promote oral health and hence overall health naturally. I knew I did not want to put any harsh chemicals in my baby’s mouth. This changed the way I practiced and lead me to discover many amazing biologic techniques to treat my patients and family.

This way of practicing is not the same as conventional pediatric practices that you’ll find around Los Angeles.

I opened my practice Pure Smiles South Bay, located in Redondo Beach, in 2018. I incorporated the biologic techniques I had come across and have found to have fantastic results. I now find myself treating the holistic community in Southern California with a patient base range as far north to San Luis Obisbo, and going all the way down to San Diego. I even have patients come to see me from out-of-state.

I really enjoy providing a service to families that is not easy to find.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
People don’t realize that any health professional who opens a private practice are also small business owners. You are starting from scratch. I had to get a loan, find the space, design the space and manage construction. All this in addition to being a full time dentist.

Once that was completed, I had to start my patient base from scratch. Once my practice opened, I had days with only one patient. I also had a payroll to fulfill, so I wasn’t making any income for over a year. It was stressful in the beginning not knowing what lied ahead.

Gradually my practice built by word of mouth and my involvement in the community.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Overall, I would want the readers to know that there is a dentist they can bring their children to who’s proven treatments are holistic and non-toxic. These treatments avoid so many of the harsh chemicals that alot of parents want to avoid.

My office treats only children and teens. We also focus not only on the the child’s oral health, but how their oral health effects to the rest of their body.

We offer treatments that are proven to help a child that are non-toxic and not found in conventional offices. Treatment like ozone therapy and ceramic fillings.

We do everything we can to avoid sedation for patients using local anesthetic and laser fillings.

Also, my practice offers services for the child’s airway. Airway can effect so many things: sleep issues like snoring, which then can lead to A.D.D. One way I treat this by a procedure called tongue tie release, which can be performed on children as young as a newborn baby. For a patient that young, it can work wonders with breastfeeding issues, which is one of the attributes I am proudest of that my practice provides.

In addition we treat airway issues with expanders, myobrace, and myofunctional therapy.
