Today we’d like to introduce you to Kien Vuu.
Hi Kien, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The journey to my current position as a concierge performance and longevity physician, media expert, and author came from humble beginnings and almost was the success story that never was. My early childhood began tumultuously as my family fled postwar Vietnam in the 1970s. My parents bundled me up along with a few of their worldly possessions and boarded a refugee boat along with more than two-thousand others. For eight long months, our boat was anchored in Manila Bay, and for eight long months, the entire ship was plagued by gastrointestinal misery. I nearly died and had the distinction as being the only infant to survive – a great joy for my parents, yet profound sadness for the other refugees.
After spending another three months in a Philippine refugee camp, we were resettled in the United States. I grew up in a poor immigrant neighborhood near Downtown Los Angeles, which was in stark contrast to the more affluent neighborhood where I attended school. Like many new immigrants, I was teased and bullied at school for being different and poor. Although I felt discouraged and lost for much of my childhood, I strived for excellence in school. Along with encouragement from my parents, I went to medical school and have since dedicated my work to helping people reclaim all aspects of their health to become happier, more fulfilled, and more successful in their lives. In my practice, I combine integrative and traditional medicine to remove or lessen the burden of lifestyle-related diseases.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Chronic disease is a challenge that I am well-acquainted with, so when patients come to me with 20 extra pounds, or prediabetes, or fatigue and low-libido, I can honestly tell them. “I know what you’re going through.” In my early days as a physician, I suffered with both type 2 diabetes and hypertension. It was rather hypocritical and embarrassing to tell patients all the healthy habits they needed to adopt in order to get themselves healthy, especially since I wasn’t heeding my own advice. When I finally made the decision to overcome this obstacle, I made significant lifestyle changes which allowed me to reverse both conditions.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Probably the biggest risk I’ve taken was to leave full-time medical practice to learn how to heal my own chronic disease. I had a formative experience with a patient named Ishmael who was dying of pancreatic cancer. At one visit, he said to me, “I’m so grateful to be alive. And every moment I’m here, I choose to spread love and joy.” I realized that in spite of his impending death, Ishmael was reminding me of the one thing in life that I wasn’t doing – living consciously.
I was “showing up” to life, but I definitely wasn’t being “present.” It was after Ishmael’s passing that I fully committed myself to making the life changes I needed to become a more authentic person who showed up to life, always being present. This experience guided me get into the media and entertainment space, something that was potentially quite risky. Yet with perseverance and encouragement, I have succeeded in using this platform to help other people overcome the same struggles I had.
