Sugar Beach House was founded by Kelsey Larkin and Christine Starr with the idea of having a high-end yet cozy, beach-style salon in the town where they both live. Between the two of them, they have over 20 years of experience. Their relationship began in 2019 when Kelsey was employed at a separate salon owned by Christine in Santa Barbara, California. Both of them being moms and seeing the need for a salon of the same caliber in Ventura; they decided to enter into a partnership and open Sugar Beach House. They opened Sugar Beach and began taking clients in December of 2021 and have been steadily growing their clientele ever since.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Opening Sugar Beach was difficult as both of us have very young children which takes up a lot of time. Finding time between our full-time jobs, trying to open a new business on the side, and juggling family life was definitely a huge challenge. Another challenge is that sugaring is a hair removal technique that is lesser known than waxing. Many women don’t know the advantages of sugar over the wax and will opt to go to a waxing salon because that is what they know. Once people realize how much better sugaring is for your skin, they transition over and we have a client for life. But getting the word out and educating people on the differences can definitely take time.
We’ve been impressed with Sugar Beach House, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sugar Beach House is a top-tier salon that has the feel of a vacation home at the beach. Unlike your typical waxing salon, Sugar Beach specializes in hair removal using a natural and gentle alternative – sugar! This is comprised of just 3 simple ingredients; sugar, water and lemon! Sugaring removes hair in the natural direction of growth versus traditional waxing which removes hair against the growth. This creates an easier removal of the root which leads to fewer in-grown hairs, less breakage, and longer intervals required in between services! In addition to sugaring, we offer custom airbrush tanning using an aloe vera-based formula that can be customized based on your desired color. Finally, we offer lash lifts, tinting, and brow laminations!
