Exploring Life & Business with Karin Breve of Iconic Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin Breve.

Hi Karin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey in architecture and urban planning in Brazil, where I completed my degree and developed a strong foundation in design and construction. After graduating, I decided to take a leap and move to Los Angeles, eager to immerse myself in a new, dynamic environment and expand my horizons in the world of architecture.

In L.A., I had the privilege of working with several established architectural firms, where I contributed to a variety of residential and commercial projects. These experiences allowed me to gain invaluable knowledge of the industry, from project management to client relations, while also refining my design style.

Over the years, my skills and confidence grew, and I knew I was ready to take the next step in my career. I founded Iconic Design, my own architecture and interior design studio, with a focus on creating spaces that blend creativity, functionality, and a deep understanding of my clients’ needs.

Today, I lead a growing portfolio of projects that range from custom homes to high-end commercial spaces, always striving to deliver designs that inspire, connect, and enhance the lives of those who experience them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth, but the challenges have been some of the most valuable learning experiences of my journey. Moving from Brazil to Los Angeles, especially with a fresh degree in architecture, came with its own set of hurdles. The cultural differences, adapting to a new language, and understanding the intricacies of the American construction and design market were major adjustments.

Early on, I faced the challenge of establishing myself in such a competitive and fast-paced environment. I worked long hours at multiple architectural firms, learning everything I could about the business side of things and honing my design skills. At times, the pressure to perform at such a high level, while constantly adapting to new styles and client expectations, was overwhelming.

Another significant challenge was navigating the bureaucratic and legal aspects of setting up my own business in the U.S. From licensing to managing contracts, it was a steep learning curve. But with time, I built a strong network of professionals—contractors, suppliers, and other designers—who became invaluable partners in my journey.

The biggest struggle, however, was trusting myself to take the leap and open my own studio, Iconic Design. It was scary to step away from the security of working with established firms, but it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. The confidence I gained through the struggles, the lessons learned, and the people I met along the way have all been key to my success today.

Every struggle was a step forward, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Those challenges ultimately shaped me into the designer and business owner I am now.

We’ve been impressed with Iconic Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
