Today we’d like to introduce you to JT Barnett.
Hi JT, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
• Born in LA • Grew up playing hockey, turned professional at 20, played pro hockey for six years, retired at 26 because I was unhappy, retired with $0 and 0 plans for a job
• Started making content, built a following, started posting on TikTok, started the first adult TikTok creator house that went from 0 to 1 million in 60 days
• Then started a TikTok strategy team and recruiting company, BarnettX, and now that’s what I do today
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
• I retired from pro sports with $0 saved, no college degree, no high school diploma and no job interviews lined up. • Not only the transition of being done with the life that I lived for 25 years, but also needing to find ways to make money and navigating a new life.
• Then when covid happened, I was running an event company that was my new passion and when covid shut that down, I had to once again pivot into something new.
As you know, we’re big fans of BarnettX. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a TikTok strategy team and recruiting firm. We teach some of the top consumer brands in the world today how to organically create content on TikTok and we have a lot of fun doing it. We are known for being a creator-led strategy team, so we are very unique in the sense that we speak the language of the business but we look at things through the lens of creators. There’s not many others that do that.
What sets us apart from others is that we are current practitioners of the platform and strategies that we teach.
I am most proud of breeding a culture of people who really enjoy their job and are exceptional at what they do.
If you’re a company looking to prioritize your TikTok or recruit creators to be hired to run your TikTok, hit us up!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I can’t emphasize enough sending messages on social platforms like IG to people who are doing what you’d like to be doing. Majority of the relationships I have built have started with me reaching out via social media just because I am intrigued at what the person is up to. What has worked well for me is genuinely trying to connect and support others rather than approaching relationships transactionally.
