She understands that endometriosis is a major reason women experience pain, though she strives to assess for all additional co-existing generators of pain in order to help women live pain free productive lives.
Dr. Kerin Orbuch is a fellowship trained Endometriosis excision surgeon. She sees the value in addressing Endometriosis, an inflammatory and autoimmune disease, via eastern and western approaches. The cornerstone of endometriosis treatment is surgical excision of endometriosis, though she understands the importance of incorporating integrative medicine and combining eastern & western medicine approaches in helping her patients heal and getting them on the road to recovery.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the last nearly 20 years, there has always been forward momentum, largely due to my passion, determination and my optimistic approach. Although I am a surgeon, and love to operate, I believe surgery plus a multidisciplinary approach is essential to allowing patients to Beat Endo, which is the title of my book ‘Beating Endo How to reclaim your life from endometriosis’. I formulated a plan that involves both surgical as well as a multidisciplinary approach. I do believe that excision of endometriosis, the cornerstone of treating endometriosis, is essential to helping those with endometriosis heal. I also believe approaching this inflammatory disorder in a multidisciplinary way, including integrative gut health, mindbody approach, as well as assessing for multiple pain generators is key. In general, surgical specialists like to treat everything with a scalpel. It has taken much tenacity to get a surgical society/surgeons to view endometriosis through an inflammatory lens.
As you know, we’re big fans of Iris Wings— sanctuary for Endometriosis Surgery and Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Meaning behind the logo:
“Iris Wings: Sanctuary for Endometriosis Surgery & Wellness” has multiple symbolic meanings, but ultimately conveys a message of hope, healing, and comprehensive care. The name combines symbolic elements of courage, freedom and support with a clear focus on specialized medical treatment, surgery, and a multidisciplinary approach to healing and reclaiming your life from Endometriosis
IRIS
The symbolism of the iris flower – my namesake – encompasses themes of wisdom, valor, hope, faith, connection, and protection.
Wisdom and Valor: In ancient Greece, the iris flower was associated with Iris, the messenger goddess who traveled between the earth and the heavens. Because of this association, the iris came to symbolize wisdom and valor. As someone that lived in chronic endo pain myself, my goal is for my patients to transcend through their pain under the wings of someone that not just has the medical know-how and skill set; but as someone that has walked your path, can empathize with exactly what you’re going through, and most importantly: believes your pain, and has the toolkit to get you on the other side of it! Get ready to blossom into your new pain free life like a beautiful iris flower
Connection and Communication: Due to its association with the messenger goddess Iris in Greek mythology, the iris can also symbolize communication and connection. So much of what I do is linked to communication skills: it is emotional, taxing, and draining navigating a life with endometriosis. I know this first hand. I communicate with my patients with love, compassion, understanding and with clear guardrails of what needs to be done to get you on the path to healing and living a pain free life
Protection: In some cultures, the iris flower is believed to have protective qualities. I am hyper protective of my patients; I am protective of your physical health as much as your mental. Pain management and remedy at Iris Wings is truly head to toe multidisciplinary care, and to get to that place, it is essential my patients feel safe and protected
WINGS
Wings represent freedom, protection, and support. They evoke the idea of being lifted and carried to a place of safety and care. Wings also symbolize the ability to rise above challenges, reflecting the journey of those dealing with endometriosis
The logo is an evolution of my ‘Angel Wing’ logo, the additional angel wing creates the appearance of ‘Wings’, plural, to represent the additional angels on my team that share my ethos and commitment to beating endo
SANCTUARY
A sanctuary is a place of refuge, safety, and peace. It suggests a welcoming and nurturing environment where patients can find solace and comprehensive care
SURGERY & WELLNESS
Both surgical interventions and overall wellness for those affected by Endometriosis. The need for a skilled excision surgeon in tandem with holistic approaches to treatment; addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of the condition
What were you like growing up?
I was always very athletic, and curious and an outside the box thinker. I played a lot of video games and played numerous sports which helped with my hand eye coordination, which is essential for minimally invasive surgery.
