Today we’d like to introduce you to Francine Muhoza.
Hi Francine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for art and fashion began at a young age, around nine years old. I had a passion for fashion, drawing, and I would find anything interesting to draw on, from books to class desks. During that time, I was also involved in music, singing alongside my older sister at church, performing at different churches and concerts, and even writing songs together.
Unfortunately, in 2011, my sister was murdered and it was the most traumatizing experience of my life. Music and art became my refuge, providing me with a means of expressing myself and processing the emotions I couldn’t put into words. They played a significant role in healing me and helping me cope with the trauma for many years.
My interest in fashion grew deeper during high school. When I went to boarding school in Rwanda, we often organized school fashion shows. Initially, I participated as a model, but as time went on, I found myself taking charge of organizing the shows and managing the models. Despite limited resources and restrictions on leaving the school until the end of the semester, I used whatever materials I could find to create unique looks for the shows, including bedsheets, other students’ accessories, and clothes.
As I approached graduation when the school was celebrating its 10th anniversary. I did a pop-up with the help of my two friends; we showcased a collection of art pieces, t-shirts that I painted, and accessories I made from plastic bottles. The response was overwhelming, and the success encouraged me to pursue my passion further.
After school, one of my friends from our traditional dance group suggested we attend a casting call for what she thought was a modeling agency. However, it turned out to be a competition. Despite the surprise, we gave it a try, and both of us passed the first selection. Throughout the boot camps, my focus was on learning and growing as a model rather than solely competing. In the end, I was honoured to be selected as Miss Fashion Burundi.
In 2018, I moved to Canada for school and I was enrolled in a fashion design school. I kept modeling and have had a chance to work with many amazing designers, brands, photographers, make-up artists, and many creatives.
In 2020, when the pandemic started and everything was closed and we were home, I decided to start teaching myself digital art to have something to do.
And while I was in school too, I had to figure out how to afford to stay in school and be able to get school supplies regularly because being a fashion designer student required a lot of expenses, buying fabrics and art supplies regularly. And because I was already selling paintings and had many people who were asking me to make them clothes as they would see my outfits, I decided to Launch and start my brand Nshinge Design at the end of 2020. Nshinge Design is a brand of that focus on storytelling and raising awareness of mental health through fashion and art. The brand is more than just art and clothes but shows other people who are going through a lot that I see them. As the founder of Nshinge Design, my goal is to provide a platform where I can provide a space where we can have deep conversations on the importance of raising awareness on mental health.
No, my journey from a young art and fashion enthusiast to where I am today has been filled with ups and downs, challenges, and triumphs. Art and fashion have been my constant companions, providing healing, inspiration, and the courage to pursue my dreams. I am excited about the future and eager to continue making a positive impact in the creative world through my creativity and passion.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a fashion designer and artist comes with its fair share of challenges and struggles. Starting a career as a fashion designer and artist often requires a significant investment in materials, equipment, and education. Financial instability can be a constant concern having to work different jobs. As an artist, model and fashion designer, I am often facing constant evaluation and critiques of my work and dealing with rejections and negative feedback but over the years, I have learned that people saying no is redirection.
There’s also finding the balance between expressing one’s creativity and meeting commercial demands, which can be challenging. But I have also learned to accept that as an artist, if I like something it’s good enough for the world to see.
There are moments when my inspiration seems elusive, and it can be frustrating to try to come up with fresh and innovative ideas all the time.
There is also Balancing creativity with practical aspects of running a business which can be overwhelming sometimes, but despite these challenges, as an artist and a fashion designer, I am driven by my passion and love for my craft.
The fulfillment of seeing my creations come to life, the joy of connecting with amazing people, the support and the impact my work makes on people’s lives keep me going despite the hardships.
