Exploring Life & Business with Evelyn West of Cooings Doula Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn West.

Evelyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Evelyn West. I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in developmental psychology. During my studies, I discovered the joy of development and the magic of birth work. I was deeply drawn to the emotional and physical changes that happen during this time.

I decided to follow that calling and became a DONA certified birth doula. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many mothers through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, offering emotional support, physical care, and guidance they can trust. Every birth I attend reminds me why I chose this path and how compassion, knowledge, and presence can truly make a difference.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. On a personal level, I wasn’t able to have children myself, which was a painful and humbling part of my journey. I later chose adoption, and through that experience, I realized how deeply I still wanted to be part of the birth and postpartum world. Since I didn’t have the chance to experience childbirth firsthand, I felt a calling to support other mothers through theirs – to be there, to listen, and to help make the process a little gentler and more empowering.

Professionally, one of the main challenges was earning trust within medical settings. Early on, I often had to explain my role and help doctors and nurses feel comfortable having a doula present. It took patience, communication, and time to show that we all share the same goal: ensuring the well-being of the birthing parent and baby.

These experiences have shaped not only my work, but also my sense of purpose. They’ve taught me that even when our own paths take unexpected turns, we can still find meaning in helping others navigate theirs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cooings Doula Care?
Cooings Doula Care is a maternal and postpartum support company dedicated to reimagining how families experience the weeks and months after birth. We focus on providing holistic, culturally sensitive care by blending traditional Asian practices with modern, evidence-based approaches. Our mission is to walk alongside mothers and families through recovery and early parenting with care, knowledge, and personalized support.

What makes Cooings special is the depth of collaboration within our care model. Our team includes DONA and Asian Doula Alliance-certified birth doulas, certified postpartum doulas, newborn care specialists, registered nurses, IBCLC lactation consultants, American Red Cross-certified instructors, and wellness professionals. Together, we create a seamless support system for both mother and baby. We offer breastfeeding guidance, emotional wellness care, newborn care support, sleep support, and postpartum meals, all tailored to each family’s individual needs.

We are proud of the trust we’ve built with hundreds of families across the United States and of our commitment to inclusivity and innovation. We also work with healthcare providers, insurance programs, and corporate wellness initiatives to make postpartum care more accessible and better integrated into the broader maternal health system.

At Cooings, we believe postpartum care is more than physical recovery. It is a sacred and transformative chapter in a family’s life. Our goal is to make sure no parent has to go through it alone, and that every mother feels supported, nurtured, and empowered as she steps into this new stage of life.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am deeply grateful to many people who have supported and inspired me along the way, and one person I especially want to recognize is Ruby Liu. Ruby is the Education Manager at Cooings, an Asian Doula Alliance Certified Doula and Certified Doula Instructor, as well as an IBCLC Certified Lactation Consultant. Her knowledge, professionalism, and passion for maternal care have played an essential role in shaping the growth and direction of our work.

Ruby has been central to building our education programs, training new doulas, and ensuring that the care we provide is both culturally sensitive and evidence-based. She has guided me through many important decisions and helped elevate the quality and depth of the support we offer families. Beyond her professional expertise, her unwavering belief in our mission and her dedication to empowering both mothers and doulas have been a constant source of strength and inspiration.

I also want to recognize the many families we have had the honor to serve. Their trust, stories, and feedback continue to teach us and help us grow. Together with people like Ruby and the incredible families we support, Cooings keeps evolving and staying true to its mission of redefining postpartum care.
