Hi Erik, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts like many entrepreneurs: with a mix of ambition, risk-taking, and a refusal to settle. By the time I was 26, I had already built, scaled, and sold two e-commerce companies, learning a lot about what it takes to succeed—and fail—in business. The biggest lesson? Most companies struggle with marketing, and the solutions out there are either overpriced agencies or underperforming freelancers. So, in 2014, I launched Hawke Media with a simple idea: to create an accessible, à la carte marketing solution that could help businesses of all sizes grow without needing to hire an in-house team.

Fast forward over a decade, and Hawke Media has become the fastest-growing marketing consultancy in the U.S., working with over 5,000 brands and valued at $150 million—all without taking on outside capital or accruing debt. Along the way, we launched Hawke.AI, a proprietary marketing analytics tool, and I wrote The Hawke Method, a bestseller that distills our marketing philosophy into actionable insights.

But here’s the real story: none of this came easy. Building Hawke meant navigating challenges, making tough calls, and staying ahead of an ever-changing industry. I believe in taking calculated risks, pushing boundaries, and, most importantly, surrounding myself with the right people. That’s how we’ve managed to disrupt an industry and keep growing year after year.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth roads don’t make strong entrepreneurs. The journey to building Hawke Media has been anything but easy, and honestly, I wouldn’t trust anyone who says their success came without challenges.

One of the biggest struggles was scaling a company without taking outside funding. That meant every hire, every investment, and every new initiative had to be calculated. There was no safety net. We had to prove we could deliver results, not just talk about it. Another challenge was navigating the ever-changing marketing landscape, because what worked five years ago won’t cut it today. Keeping up with trends is tough, but staying ahead of them is even tougher. That’s why we’re constantly innovating, like launching Hawke.AI to give businesses real-time insights and a competitive edge.

If there’s one takeaway from all the obstacles, it’s this: you can’t be afraid to pivot, adapt, or even fail. Every challenge is a chance to learn, recalibrate, and come back stronger.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about LA is its versatility. LA isn’t the best at any one thing, but it’s the best at everything, meaning: it’s not the BEST for food, or the BEST for nature, or the BEST for business, or the BEST for lifestyle, or the BEST to raise a family, or the BEST for travel… but if you want it all, it is the BEST. It’s the one city where you can truly have it all.

What do I like least? The politics and leadership. The city has incredible potential, but it’s often held back by poor decision-making and ineffective governance. There’s a lot of work to be done to help LA reach the heights it’s capable of achieving.
