Exploring Life & Business with ERIK GARCIA of SUPERNOVA ENTERTAINMENT GROUP LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to ERIK GARCIA.

Hi ERIK, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got captivated by DJing in a very odd situation. I was a 10 year old kid living in Baldwin Park, CA with an old Acer laptop that had a computer virus (starts with lime and ends with wire*). Because of this, I took my laptop to an IT guy on marketplace to fix it. After it got fixed, he offered to install an early beta of Virtual DJ and the rest was history.

From this old 2006 Acer laptop running Virtual DJ, I went on to gain interest in Deejaying by constantly playing around in the software. After saving up to buy a controller, I started to DJ house parties, family parties, and at my middle and high school dances. Over time, I built up my inventory for the purpose of DJing small events.

Once I entered college (UCR to be exact), I continued to develop my business to help pay for textbooks. The close proximity to Downtown Riverside helped me develop a strong presence in the Riverside nightlife area, taking my business into the realm of marketing and large scale productions. The connection between the nightlife and university environment pushed the boundaries of my business reaching multiple markets. This allowed Supernova to expand into the Santa Barbara and San Diego college spaces.

After college, I worked full-time for a multi-million transportation company based out of Long Beach. This experience allowed me to leverage unique processes into my own business. I was now able to host larger events and manage teams efficiently, building a variety of relationships with event vendors, venues, and business owners. After 1 year at this company, I left and dove head-first into Supernova full time. Since this decision, I have never looked back.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
FAR FROM IT! And I’ve done my fair share of desert renegades to back it up…..

Everyone says how easy it is to start a business. NOBODY tells you what it’s really like to run one, especially on the days where all your contracts fall through. Or the days where you can’t make your payments. Or the days where you feel like you can’t keep doing this.

However, if you keep pushing and remind yourself that you have made it this far, you can take on anything. Give yourself more credit. Even just a little effort goes further than no effort at all.

On the days where you feel like you can’t do it anymore, remind yourself why you started. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that we are capable of creating great things.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When I started off, I would always talk to the DJ at parties so I could ask questions and learned. Some of them were helpful, others weren’t. I wasn’t afraid to take no for an answer and still made an attempt to connect as much as I could.

In the end, networking is about being confident in yourself. If you give good energy you get good energy, and I could say the same for any business.
