Hi Destinee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The origin of KIKI KREME began when my mother-in-law, a Jamaican native, shared her family’s recipe for body butter with me when I was complaining about itchiness and my fear of stretch marks during my pregnancy. The recipe had been passed down through generations, and I was confident in its quality. During my pregnancy, I added her own unique touch to the recipe and loved the result. I shared it with friends, some of whom were also pregnant, and received positive feedback that it was better than anything they could buy in stores. My doula at the time worked with a ton of celebrities and was raving about it them. She asked me if she could sell it in her yoga studio. It didn’t even have a name at the time but with encouragement from my husband and mother, I began making enough of the product to sell, and I have continued ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business has presented several challenges for me, both personal and professional. Despite having a speech impediment very young, ADD, and later being diagnosed with dyslexia (High school was rough.), I’ve grown to understand and embrace my strengths and weaknesses through owning and running my own business. At times, I am proud of what I have accomplished, but there are also days when I become overwhelmed and find myself struggling with certain tasks such as easy as sending an email. On the days that I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing, I like to remind myself that no one knows what they’re doing lol. For some reason that really helps me. Despite these challenges, I have learned to delegate responsibilities to others and focus on areas where I excel, which has helped me to grow and develop my business.
