Born in Moscow, Russia and later moving to Odessa, Ukraine with my family, I grew up witnessing the power of starting over. My parents’ journey, from My mother using her skills as a seamstress to creating, producing, and selling selling clothes in street markets, To my father building a small bank in Odessa, Ukraine, taught me the value of hard work and the necessity of adaptation.
When we moved to the United States, that lesson deepened as I watched my parents forge a new path yet again. Inspired by my mother’s rise in the Custom Couture Costume world of New York City, Manhattan For the Broadway theatrical and Hollywood movie industries, I followed suit, diving into the enchanting world of costume design and production For over three decades, 35 years, my hands brought stories to life on Broadway and Hollywood’s biggest stages, crafting costumes that danced, sang, and moved with the characters I dressed.
However, the unexpected pause of the world due to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 unveiled a new chapter for me. Stationed in Southern California for what was supposed to be a brief project, I found myself amidst a global halt. It was here, in the quiet of lockdown, that I stumbled upon my true calling.
Word of my skills spread, and soon, brides began knocking at my door, gowns in hand, needing alterations. In those moments of lockdown, helping these brides prepare for their big day brought me an unprecedented sense of fulfillment. I realized then that being part of a bride’s special day, ensuring she feels beautiful and confident, was where my heart truly lay.
Thus, Darya Fomina Inc. was born in Irvine, California. My studio became a place where every stitch tells a story, every alteration a tale of transformation. Transitioning from Hollywood’s costumes on the big screen to Broadway’s costumes on grand stages to the intimate world of bridal couture has been rewarding beyond measure. Navigating the transition from a Master Seamstress for Broadway and Hollywood to starting a business focused on Professional Bridal Alterations was definitely not a smooth road.
Initially, the biggest struggle was adapting to working with the general public after years of dealing with professional designers and executives. The dynamics are vastly different; while the entertainment industry has its own set of challenges and expectations, the bride market comes with personal emotional investments and unique demands.
However, this challenge taught me invaluable lessons about customer service, direct client interaction, and the art of personalization in alterations. Overcoming these hurdles was tough but ultimately rewarding, as I found a new passion in working with brides, which has turned out to be more fulfilling than my previous work in the entertainment industry.”
