Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Webb
Hi Christopher, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It was a difficult time in my life. We had just entered into the recession. I was currently working at Home Depot. I transferred my job from LA to Memphis. I left LA, no longer able to pursue my dream of becoming an animator. I never really gave up hope, but I had to do what I had to do.
During this time, hours at work were being slashed and it was beginning to become very difficult to sustain my bills. There was always this one contractor who came into the store. Really nice guy. His name was James. We didn’t talk at all but word was he knew my situation. I need work and ironically he needed someone he could trust to work for him. I was about 22 at the time. One day, he came up to me and asked me by name who I was. I responded with yes I am Chris, wondering who he you are and why you want know who I am. He laughed at me seeing how on guard I was. He introduced himself to me, telling me what he does. Listening, still on guard but curious as to where he was going, he eventually asked me would I like to make $100 a day working for him? To many that wasn’t much but in Memphis, that was a lot. Reluctantly, I said yes! I knew little to nothing about setting tile. Yet he trusted me to learn and follow his lead. Eventually I was laid off and worked full time with him. James taught me everything. How to price jobs, shop for supplies, speak to clients, carpentry skills like painting, drywall, framing, waterproofing; everything that could be learned on the job when it came to remodeling, James taught me. And eventually, he taught me the biggest lesson of my life that changed everything for me: he taught me how to work on my own by letting me fly without warning. He disappeared for a minute. And that was how began my journey as a entrepreneur and eventually becoming a business owner over time. I thank God for that encounter. I don’t know where I’d be had I not learned from James.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. This wasn’t my passion at the time but it sustained me. Because I looked at it as a means of survival, I couldn’t take full advantage of my gifts however much they grew. Because of my mindset I had difficulties pricing and setting a proper value for myself as well as healthy boundaries. Outside of the kind clients I gained over the years, I had quite a few who took advantage of my kindness and willingness to survive. They could smell my nativity miles away. Other difficulties outside of that was learning new skills that involved plumbing and electrical work. See I learned from the streets and studying on my own so there were certain jobs I wouldn’t take until I felt comfortable with what I learned. I’ve turned down a few jobs in my time. Other struggles were permits, licensing and insurance. I knew little to nothing about operating with those qualifications in my beginning years. Ironically, because I am meticulous about my work, I became the clean guy cleaning up jobs of those who were licensed and bonded but lack the talent and integrity to do jobs properly. I learned in this industry, there are those who may have the paper but don’t have the skills I acquired through sheer hunger and being gifted from my Heavenly Father.

How do you think about luck?
Well I won’t say I don’t believe in luck, however, I am a man of faith and I understand favor. I have been favored to not only receive blessing over and abundantly but also hardships over and challenging times that when I went through them, it did not seem like a blessing at all. In all these I received and gained much wisdom and knowledge over the years about how I should run my business and live my life. Twice I shut it down due to frustrations and even despised my on craft. During those years I lost touch with my Father. Really just being honest. And if it wasn’t for my Wife Ash, whom when I first met, sent me away to heal and rekindle my relationship with my Creator, I don’t know where I’d be with this business or even in life. My life has tremendously transformed and I grateful. It gotten tough many times and I’ve given up in the past, but something deep down inside wouldn’t let me settle for less. God knew all I needed was just a spark, a push into the right direction, the right environment and I would begin to grow and flourish.
