Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanel Kenner.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into nutrition began with a deep-rooted passion for movement and wellness. From the age of four, I was immersed in the world of competitive figure skating, and later, dance– 2 disciplines that instilled in me a deep appreciation for what our bodies are capable of, and the importance of adequate nourishment. After spending 12 years in the advertising and marketing industry as a search and social marketing specialist, I realized that my true calling was in helping others cultivate a healthier relationship with food. This realization led me back to academia, where I pursued a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at California State University, Northridge, followed by the completion of a dietetic internship in order to sit for the Dietetics credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian.
In establishing Chanel Kenner Nutrition, my private practice, I aimed to create a space where people can receive compassionate, personalized nutrition counseling. My approach is firmly rooted in a weight-neutral, non-diet philosophy, emphasizing the development of sustainable health behaviors over time. I believe that food is more than just fuel; it’s a means of nourishing our bodies, minds, and relationships (most notably, the relationship we have with ourselves). Through my practice, I strive to help clients move away from the constraints of diet culture and towards a more compassionate and holistic understanding of health and wellbeing that they can carry with them throughout their lives.
Drawing from my background in both the corporate world and athletic training, I bring a unique blend of professionalism, empathy, and real-world experience to my work as a Registered Dietitian. My mission is to support clients in achieving a balanced and fulfilling relationship with food, empowering them to make choices that honor their individual needs and lifestyles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth. I left out the part of my bio that involved spending 6 years pursuing my dietetic career, and having both of my daughters during that time. I had to drop out of my very first science class, Anatomy, when I first went back to school because I was in the first-trimester with my first daughter and horribly sick all the time! I graduated from my dietetic program at CSUN while 8 months pregnant with my second daughter– with a 3.96 GPA! Moms are amazing! We can do hard things! But to say it was smooth– the really hard science classes that included organic and biochemistry (which I took at UCLA), completing my nutrition education and internship during a pandemic…it was very hard at times, and many tears were shed, plus questioning if I was crazy for pursuing this path.
And then, shifting away from the traditional weight-focused model was a major challenge. I had to re-educate myself while navigating pushback from every angle– friends, acquaintances, family, strangers on the internet, and our healthcare system which is still so steeped in diet culture. Owning and managing a private practice after a career in advertising also meant building something from the ground up, while simultaneously educating as many people as I can through my work on and offline– on what weight-neutral care really means. But every struggle has made my work so much more meaningful. Helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies, and find freedom with both that leads to meaningful and lasting health is worth every challenge.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Chanel Kenner Nutrition is a private nutrition practice rooted in a weight-neutral, non-diet approach to health. I provide one-on-one medical nutrition therapy for a wide range of health concerns—everything from diabetes and PCOS to GI issues, eating disorders, including ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). I have a knack for working with neurodivergent kids and teens.
What sets my practice apart is that I don’t use weight as a marker of health. I believe in evidence-based care that respects body diversity, honors lived experience, and focuses on helping clients build sustainable, nourishing habits without shame or restriction. Whether we’re managing a chronic condition or healing someone’s relationship with food, my goal is always the same: to support people in making food choices that feel good both physically and emotionally.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of creating a space where compassion meets clinical expertise. I work hard to be a trusted provider in a system that often fails people—especially those in larger bodies, those with disordered eating histories, and those who’ve been dismissed or misdiagnosed because of weight bias.
I also share a lot of educational, weight-inclusive content on social media to help shift the cultural narrative around nutrition. Through my podcast Plateful Parenting, I offer additional support to families navigating eating issues with their kids.
If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s this: you do not have to earn nourishment. Your body is not a problem to fix. And healing your relationship with food is not only possible—it’s empowering. It also can positively impact other areas of life, including social and romantic relationships.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are a few great ways to connect with or support my work:
–Work with me one-on-one (wink wink nudge nudge): I offer virtual medical nutrition counseling to clients across California. Whether you’re navigating a chronic condition, disordered eating, or just want a more peaceful relationship with food, you can book a discovery call through my website to see if we’re a good fit: www.chanelkennernutrition.com.
–Refer a friend or family member: Many of my clients come through word of mouth, especially families with kids or teens struggling with eating challenges. I also work with athletes, which is a really fun area of nutrition for me because of my strong athlete roots. Referrals are one of the best ways to support the practice.
–Collaborate: I love partnering with other professionals—therapists, pediatricians, schools, and wellness practitioners—who share a weight-inclusive, trauma-informed lens. I also guest speak for panels, workshops, and podcasts.
–Follow and share on social: I post free, educational content regularly on Instagram @chanel.kenner.nutrition that challenges diet culture, supports food freedom, and uplifts science-based, compassionate care. Sharing and engaging helps spread the message.
–Listen to the podcast: Plateful Parenting (available on Spotify & Apple) is where I dive into nuanced conversations about feeding, family dynamics, and evidence-based support for parents raising kids with food and body challenges.
Whether you’re a client, colleague, or curious follower—I’m always grateful for the support. Healing our relationship with food is personal, but it’s also collective.
