Brithney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I finished high school, I didn’t have a clear path for my future career. It was during college that my older sister suggested I consider an internship at HL Group, a lifestyle PR firm her friend worked with. HL Group represented prominent brands like CB2, Crate and Barrel, Marimekko, and more, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some real-world experience. From the moment I started, I was captivated. I quickly realized that public relations was the perfect fit for me, and everything started falling into place.
Throughout college, I sought out internships with various PR firms to build hands-on experience in the industry. I also worked retail jobs to support myself financially, which taught me a lot about hard work and resilience. After graduating, I jumped into PR full-time, dedicating years to honing my skills, learning the nuances of the industry, and expanding my professional network. Eventually, with this foundation and a clear vision, I took the leap and launched my own firm—Buchanan PR. It’s been a challenging yet deeply rewarding journey, and I’m grateful for every step that brought me to where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to where I am today has not been smooth at times, however it’s been rewarding. It’s taken countless sacrifices and a strong commitment to keep moving forward. In public relations, particularly in the entertainment industry, you often wear many hats, which sometimes means long hours and intense demands. However, when you’re passionate about what you do, those hours can feel like minutes. Some of the biggest challenges have involved managing different personalities that don’t always align with my own and working to secure press for clients who aren’t yet widely known. Balancing these expectations can be tough, but it’s also been essential to growing my skills and resilience.
