Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Berry.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story with The Artist Tree began in 2023, when I made the leap from a very corporate role in the trampoline park industry to join the cannabis world. Knowing I wanted to grow where I was planted, I chose to start from the bottom to truly learn the business. I even turned down a few administrative offers so I could begin as a budtender.
Being entry-level for the first time in years gave me the freedom to soak up knowledge from my more experienced peers and the flexibility to explore the community. The spirit of the “old days” — when buying weed in the back of a stranger’s car was the norm — still shines through in how reputation and community shape this industry. Showing up, getting to know people, coming with no ego, and bringing nothing but good energy is the key to success. I put myself in as many rooms as possible where I could listen and learn until I was ready to take on more.
In 2024, I was ready for a new challenge when our VP suggested I try working in the lounge upstairs. I was reluctant at first, not realizing I would soon fall in love with the role and the atmosphere. As I gained experience, the time came when I was asked to step into the position.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My path to where I am in cannabis has actually been pretty smooth! This industry is extremely competitive, but also extremely welcoming and supportive if you are kind and have a good attitude. Just show love and work hard and it comes back around! I am also fortunate to have very supportive and receptive bosses 🙂
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the lounge, our ultimate goal is simple: to provide a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We want our guests not only to enjoy cannabis, but to learn how to consume responsibly, elevate their experiences, and explore new possibilities. On any given day, as many as half of my guests can be from out of state, usually places where cannabis is illegal. Every week, I guide someone through their first dab, joint, infused beverage, or another unique experience we offer. Acting not just as a server but as a guide in administering intoxicating substances is a responsibility we take very seriously.
When we’re not introducing people to cannabis, we’re throwing events for enthusiasts of all levels. From raves and comedy nights to yoga classes, painting workshops, drag shows, and high tea, we partner with brands and creators across LA to keep things vibrant and fun.
I’m fortunate to run a tight-knit team of highly knowledgeable individuals, most of whom come from fine-dining backgrounds. If there’s one thing I can promise about The Artist Tree West Hollywood Lounge, it’s this: you’ll encounter a rare mix of laid-back warmth and organized hustle that makes the experience priceless. Whether you’re here to work on your laptop for six hours while we keep the coffee and joints flowing, or you’re ready to party with us on a Friday night, you’ll always be in the best of hands.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
For educating myself in cannabis, I like to listen to Dr. Riley Kirk (Cannabichem), Beard Bros Farms articles, First Smoke of the Day podcast, and other miscellaneous educational videos on instagram.
The way I operate in the business I run was largely inspired by Mr. Gustave from The Grand Budapest Hotel.
In regards to hospitality he says to be – “Completely invisible, but always in sight.”
