Today we’d like to introduce you to Bayo Samuel.
Hi Bayo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a PT in 2002 when I was initially hired as a sales rep for a fitness gym. At the same time, I was taking prerequisite to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). I remembered while selling membership, I would give information based on health and wellness and the importance of exercise, that the potential members would ask if I was going to be their trainer. That’s the moment I realized I should change departments and I did.
My knowledge in anatomy and physiology has allowed me to not just train clients, but become a more informed PT breaking down what’s happening internally as well as proper formation of exercises we do today.
In 2008, I became self-employed and would travel to clients’ homes, recreational parks and apartments gyms. Even though it was a bit challenging. It was so worth it doing what I truly love.
In 2015, I opened my first training studio and never looked back. Five years later, I opened my current location in the heart of the pandemic.
While I’m still actively training, I’ve shifted more into mentorship. The goal is to help future trainers find their purpose by providing a place they can use for their business development, as well as learn the fundamental of movement, and most importantly nutrition in its simplest form.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing good in life comes easy as they say. Right from the beginning, I knew I’ll be here for this long because I’d set short and long-term goals for myself. So, I’ll say I’m very fortunate to still be here after 20yrs and still evolving.
We’ve been impressed with Function Fitness Gym, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I found F.F.G “Function” in 2008. My training concept is mainly “Functional Exercises” which is the ability to perform daily physical activities such as sitting on a chair (Squatting), walking up a Stairwell (Lunges), picking up boxes when moving, or carrying a luggage onto an overhead compartment on the plane can be seen by most as nothing or simple until it becomes impossible, and without the physical and/or core strengths that one needs to perform this simple tasks we then start thinking its due to aging, but actually a lack of functional capabilities. When we exercise the objective to me is to simply be functional. So it’s very important to teach Strength Training, Flexibility Training, Core Strengthening, and Cardiovascular Endurance which primarily is our specialty. Also, incorporating proper nutrition which is 80% of every fitness program is something we pride ourselves on.
You can’t gain muscles mass if u don’t consume enough healthy calories, or lose body fat without caloric restrictions. It’s that simple.
Function is an all-exclusive private training facility that our primary focus is teaching individuals how to properly use their body in and outside the gym. It’s one on one training program because we believe in teaching proper techniques which is hard to accomplish in a group setting.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
As I continue to evolve in this industry, It’s very important to continue to work with like-minded businesses or individuals with similar focus or goals. Currently, I’m working with a boxing fitness coach in my gym that brings a different twist to what I do. Understanding the fundamental of that sport can have a huge benefit with clients that are not going be professional boxers but can be used for self-defense when necessary.
