Exploring Life & Business with Ari Ortega of My Esti Ari

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ari Ortega.

Hi Ari, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2019 I had transferred to a CSU where I planned to finish my Bachelor’s. Covid cancelled in person classes and I was stuck with teaching myself the fundamentals of my degree. This became really overwhelming for me which then became evident in my performance. I ultimately decided to withdraw from classes and focus on working. During my period away from school I realized that I actually wasn’t confident in the path that I chose. I always knew I wanted to have a certain type of freedom in whatever career I chose. At that moment I needed to figure out how I could attain that.
I always had a love for esthetics, even before I knew there was an actual word for it! Once I understood the validity of this career I didn’t look back. I browsed schools for a couple months and then took the leap. I knew I wanted to own my own business as soon as I started school and meeting so many other esti’s that were killing it on their own, fostered that possibility even more. In the middle of completing my hours for my esthetics program I got a job as a receptionist in the industry. Upon graduating, I was able to attain an esthetician position. This job lended back end and hands on experience which helped me grow confidence to start my own business. Once I had saved enough money to invest in myself I paired up with my amazing cousin @beautybygabriella._ to open a shared studio. Which is where I still work from! <3 It was the best decision I could have made for myself, truly.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles I faced on the road to my career, to some it up in one word, were misconceptions. I think for many people it’s still hard to understand the legitimacy of a career in esthetics. I was also guilty of this, but it ultimately became a big point of contention within my family. Although I didn’t feel 100% supported, it only drove me to ensure that I become successful! Everyone in my family eventually came around and fully support me, just a little tough love 🙂
Misconceptions about this industry don’t stop with outsiders either. I think it’s a huge misconception to think that it’s a easy road in esthetics. You have to wear so many hats in the beginning and it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed. It’s a struggle I still deal with! I’m finding the balance slowly but surely 🙂

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business @my.esti.ari is an independently owned wax studio in Paramount, Ca that offers full body waxing and skin brightening services. I personally specialize in bikini waxing with brazilians being my most requested service! I believe that my caring and comforting personality is what sets me apart. It’s the thing that most of my guests compliment me on, which means the world to me! <3 I think I’m most proud that I am able to come across as a kind and trustworthy service provider, even through the internet! I get lots of first time guests through Instagram & Tiktok. Essentially, people that have never met me think I’m cool enough to wax them which is sooo crazy!!! Thanks guys :D

What matters most to you?
In my business, what matters the most to me is compassion. I think it’s sooo important to be compassionate in this industry. Trust gained by clients is so crucial to being successful and when you create community with clients it doesn’t even feel like work! All I can hope is that my guests feel comfy and cared for when being serviced by me ^.^
