Exploring Life & Business with Anisha Khanna of Sonäge Skincare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anisha Khanna.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in India, with my grandmother’s remedies as a daily part of life and a purely holistic approach. At the age of 19, I moved to New York City with $20 in my pocket – and picked up the habits of a typical American college student.

Within months my body went into complete shock, with massive weight gain, skin breakout and immune deficiency. It was through this health scare… that I began my journey back to holism.

I joined Equinox as one of the first employees in the early 90s. Considered to be the first curated boutique fitness club, my boss at that time, the founder of Equinox, was someone seeking ‘wellness’ and alternative healing modalities. This led me to my own path of discovery; I became immersed in healing methods from different cultures and developed a support system of holistic naturopathic healers. This became a tremendous eye-opener for me, the root of all inflammation and reaction within the body and skin is a result of lifestyle, diet and environment. I made a commitment at this point to go into the root of the issues and look at natural ways to heal — rather than immediately responding with a prescription and a quick fix.

I was introduced to a facialist through the Dalai Lama community in my mid-20s who incorporated holistic practices and philosophies in her practice and product and integrated this in my routine for many years.

After moving to Los Angeles in 2013, I looked in the mirror one morning to discover very prominent brown spots on my face. Had I not experienced the severe skin issues 20 years earlier, I may have gone to a Dermatologist — instead I chose to go to an Esthetician to understand the root cause and explore natural alternatives.

I was handed a jar of Sonäge Skincare product and within weeks saw a drastic improvement in my skin pigmentation.

As I entered the next phase of my life, I began researching the product and ended up in the formulator’s office a few weeks later. At that point I knew I had found my next phase of life, to take these incredible results producing skincare products — then only available in estheticians’ offices— and make it accessible to consumers.

Today, at the helm of Sonäge Skincare, my core intention is to educate the consumer that they have a choice when it comes to addressing skin issues.

“Every part of your lifestyle and the decision you make around diet, environment and what you use topically affects your skin. The immediate conversation around us is that if something is wrong go to a doctor and get a prescription, rather than first taking a step back to address what is happening at the root. How do we encourage the mother to take her 13-year-old to an esthetician? Or the woman, like myself who has discovered a skin abnormality to pursue a safer, natural-alternative?”

“If I can offer a face wash that is $20 to get people off the chemically laden commercial product they are using, this is worth it to me. We need to talk to the consumer about the availability of a professional-grade natural product”.

I am proud to present to the world a brand that is not only natural and accessible but also supports EWG VERIFIED™, the gold standard in the health and wellness certification.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sonäge /sôn•äge/ (n) derived from the French expression, “Bien porter son âge,” which translates to “To look good for one’s age.” But our mission goes beyond that. Sonäge advocates a holistic lifestyle, changing the way we treat our bodies to feel good for our age. Beauty, like food, should be a health choice. The New Natural at Sonäge is our commitment to care deeply about the ingredients in our products and making a positive impact on our community of employees, clients and partners. We have been raising the bar even higher by aligning our brand with the Environmental Working Group, supporting EWG Verified™, the gold standard in health and wellness certification. Sonäge is a minority women-owned company that fosters an inclusive workplace. And because we think being kind is beautiful, our products have always been cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As a leader of the consumer product brand, success to me is having a positive impact on my clients, my team members (helping them grow and learn new skills), our professional community and social responsibility while we achieve our financial goals and commitments.
