Exploring Life & Business with Allison Wells of Allison Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Wells

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area in a family that valued healthy living and had an appreciation for the outdoors. This lead me to develop a passion for athletics and cooking from a young age. I started playing soccer at five years old, and I started experimenting in the kitchen shortly thereafter. I continued to play soccer through my first two years of college and then became increasingly interested in fitness and nutrition.

I graduated college with a BS in Broadcast TV Journalism, and set out for LA, intending to start personal training part time while exploring the world of TV production. I soon realized that I loved working with others in the wellness space, and pursued Health Coaching as a career.

In 2006, I started my own Wellness Business as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, an AFPA Certified Nutrition & Wellness Consultant, and later as a Precision Nutrition Certified Sleep, Stress Management, & Recovery Coach.

Most recently, I’ve been focusing on expanding my business to include Corporate Health and Wellness Coaching. I create and facilitate Wellness Challenges, Mindfulness Talks, Lunch and Learn seminars, and the like. I love the opportunity to reach larger audiences, encouraging participants to take a look at every aspect of their health (not just their fitness and diet), and start to make foundational changes that can last a lifetime.

What I love most about my work is connecting with people and the relationships we develop. Beyond that, I find it extremely rewarding when a client has that “lightbulb moment”, where they start connecting the dots between their habits and their health, then through consistent, incremental changes, start seeing and feeling the results of their efforts.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Having a business is full of ups and downs. After nearly two decades, I can say it doesn’t necessarily get easier, but doing something I’m passionate about, instead of merely chasing a paycheck, is something I’m deeply grateful for. I’m constantly working to keep evolving and building my business. Navigating the ebbs and flows of clients, creating new programs, generating new leads, investing in marketing, and building my platform are just some of the tasks necessary to keep up with the industry.

One of the more difficult struggles recently is the saturation of the Wellness space on social media. There are so many people claiming to be “experts”, and, because of their large following not necessarily their experience, those people sometimes overshadow those of us who have spent our lives genuinely dedicated to this work. It also creates information overload for those who are looking for advice or expertise, and many people end up trying diets, workouts, and programs that are not recommended for their specific body or lifestyle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Allison Wellness?
Through Allison Wellness, I offer a holistic approach to Health Coaching. I take into account each element of my client’s health (sleep, stress, occupation, environment, nutrition, etc.), and develop a strategy that is tailored to their specific needs and goals.

By drawing a picture of the WHOLE person, we can start to determine how each aspect is affecting the individual’s overall health, getting to the root of whatever obstacles are holding them back from optimal health.

I use this philosophy for both one-on-one clients and corporate wellness groups, helping people become more aware of how their habits are impacting their health, relationships, energy, and productivity.

When it comes to personal training, I have worked with an array of demographics. I specialize in functional core and strength training, injury rehabilitation, prenatal and postpartum clients, seniors, and youth.

When I’m working with someone on their nutrition strategy, it’s important that we come up with a program that is sustainable and realistic for their particular lifestyle, not just a “one-size-fits-all” meal plan or diet.

We often downplay the impact sleep and stress have on our health until it’s too late. I coach people to use specific tools to manage the stressors in their lives, as well as to intentionally create environments that decrease stress, increase the quality of their sleep, and promote recovery.

Bringing all of these elements together through small, consistent actions is what creates longterm, sustainable results. My goal is to help people connect with their bodies and shift their habits to create transformative change in their lives.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
With a degree in Broadcast TV News, I’ve always been interested in reaching people on a larger platform, with the purpose of health education. I’ve spent years studying improv at Upright Citizen’s Brigade, and taking TV/ web hosting classes, both of which have helped me increase my confidence presenting to an audience.

In addition to working with large corporate groups, I’ve been featured on several health, fitness, cooking, and nutrition segments on the local LA news stations, hosted cooking events, and have worked as a spokesperson for various wellness brands.
