Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Ochoa.
Hi Alejandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I always struggled with confidence. Especially when I started getting acne. I started breaking out in 5th grade. In middle school and high school, it was at its worst. Middle school I really struggled because I didn’t wear makeup to cover it up, so I really felt that that was all people saw when they looked at me. And often times they made it known that it was all they saw. Upon entering high school, I found a love for makeup, as I was able to cover up my insecurities. It helped me break out of my shell a bit, and find some confidence, although I still struggled with it. I was constantly trying out new things, creams, or medications to help with my acne, but it always came back. My skin didn’t fully clear up until adulthood, and once it did, I already had a love for skin & skincare. I didn’t really think I could make a career out of that love, so I kept going from job to job, feeling very unfulfilled. When I was 27, I realized I had to do something with my life. I was scared to start something new, but with the support of my mom, I was able to quit my job & go to school full-time. It was the best decision I could have ever made.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been very blessed with the road I have been on, but that’s not to say that there haven’t been some struggles. I think the biggest struggle has been not really knowing how or where to start. In school, they teach you the basics, they don’t really teach you how to run a business. There have been times when I’ve felt lost or unmotivated. When I graduated, I didn’t start working for someone else, I went straight into working for myself. Although I am very proud of myself for that leap, there have definitely been times when I had no clue what I was doing and wished I would have gone a different route. In the end, I believe I made the right choice, and I am where I’m supposed to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed esthetician. I provide facial and body treatments. I feel the most proud of my work and brand when I connect and make a difference in my clients’ lives. There have been clients who come in just how I used to be; insecure, unhappy, and not living the life they want to live- because something like acne is holding them back. Seeing how I can transform their skin is so amazing because I am not just transforming their skin, I’m transforming their life, their confidence, how they see and feel about themselves. I know firsthand that acne can hold you back from so many things. Just knowing that I can make any difference in someone’s life is the biggest blessing. When my clients come to me, I want them to know and feel that this is a safe space. No matter who you are and what your struggles are. No matter what service they are getting, I always make sure they leave relaxed, happy, and wanting more!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the things holding me back from starting this journey was thinking that I was too old to start a new career. Hearing that now, it sounds ridiculous. I think as women, we are always pressured into thinking that we have to reach certain milestones by a certain time or age. Whether it be marriage, children, or in this case a career. Everyone’s journey is different, and whatever path you take on that journey is going to make you who you are. It’s never too late to begin anything.
