Exploring Life & Business with Dwight Jenkins of Beauty By Jenkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwight Jenkins.

Hi Jenkins, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ.  I moved to Los Angeles six (6) years ago to pursue a new beginning for myself.  I was fortunate to find my first employment opportunity as a maxillofacial surgery/anethesiologist assistant.  I worked hand in hand with Beverly Hills doctors and learned a great deal.

When the pandemic hit, like many American’s I had to reinvent my future.  Beauty, fitness, and a healthy lifestyle are at my core.  My work is my passion.  Helping others has always been something I believe we are put on this earth to do.   So I created Beauty By Jenkins: and by the grace of God, my company has taken off.

Over the last several months, I’ve masked myself up, which I’m used to because of my profession, and built a client base by doing my work in my client’s homes.  Now, I have clients all over the region and country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new business is never a smooth ride.  Thank God for Apple iPhone because I started Beauty By Jenkins on my iPhone.  I filed all of my documents, created my website, social media and got licensed all on my iPhone.

The beginning of my journey was not a cakewalk.  Like many young African American’s, I was raised by my grandparents in a house with seven (7) grandchildren.  My mother was a drug user and my father is in prison for being a drug dealer.  I wore “hammy downs” because we didn’t have a lot of money.  Friends would tell me they saw my mother on the streets looking for drug, all the while trying to figure out my own path and sexuality.  So, when I was 17, I decided to emancipate myself so that I could make the best decision for myself.  So my adulthood started early and is really the core of why I work so hard.

Like every entrepreneur, I went to the school of hard knocks.  I studied, got licensed, worked hard, showed up to work on time and learned as much as I could.  In the back of my mind, I always knew that one day I needed to have my own business so all of my hard work would pay off for me and not some corporation or individual.

I’ve not had many mentors and no family to turn to for help.  I’ve literally made it all on my own.  I had a few good instructors along the way who taught me how to do lashes and I’m very appreciative of all of those who have been there when I’ve reached out for help.  As many business people know, I got stepped on, ripped off, told I was a failure but none of that stopped me.  I just kept pushing and working and here I am today.  Stronger, wiser and proud.

We’ve been impressed with Beauty By Jenkins, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beauty by Jenkins is a black owned business enterprise in Los Angeles, CA.  We specialize in skin care, eyelash extensions, teeth whitening, and personal beauty care.  Right now, I do all of my client interactions myself.  I just started my business 9 months ago.  I do have plans for growth and expansion but right now, my clients work directly with me.  I bring a Beverly Hills experience of beauty directly to my client’s homes…wearing a mask of course.  What makes our brand unique and different is this isn’t a job for me.  It’s my passion.  I love beauty and want to do everything I can to assist my clients achieve their personal beauty goals as well.  That’s what I do.  When I’m finished with my client, I don’t just walk away and say thank you.  I engage with my clients to make sure we are partners in their personal beauty journey.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Living in the Los Angeles region has so many benefits.  First and foremost, the weather is amazing.  The weather and the ocean are the main reasons people move to southern California. I’ve made some amazing people and made some great friends here. Los Angeles is home. This beautiful environment we live in has a few challenges. Millions of people live here which makes it difficult to get around. Even with a car, commutes and congestion are challenging.
