Dr. Randy Moraitis’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Randy Moraitis and have shared our conversation below.

Randy, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Over 12 years ago, I launched the nonprofit CarePossible to provide free mental health care services to veterans and military families in crisis. Several weeks ago, we held CarePossible’s 12th Annual Salute to the Military gala. I was so incredibly proud of my team! The event was a sold-out success, raising nearly $600,000 for veterans’ services! My staff and our volunteers all worked so hard on the event, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. I am so grateful for all of the veterans’ lives and families that will be saved!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a behavioral healthcare specialist in private practice with a PhD in Positive Neuropsychology. My mission is to offer help, hope, and healing to those struggling in life, and to develop other leaders who do the same. My private practice offers both counseling and coaching services, in person and via tele-health. I am also the Founder and CEO of CarePossible, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides free mental healthcare services to veterans and military families. Additionally, I live out my life’s mission by leading Lifelines, a recovery meeting for folks affected by addiction and/or mental health issues. Lifelines has over 500 weekly attendees and has positively impacted many thousands of people over the years.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I have worked nonstop since I was 12, when I had a paper route! I’ve been blessed with some amazing bosses and mentors over the years, including Dr. David Stoop and Dr. John Townsend — both psychologists and bestselling authors. I’ve also had some horrible bosses who taught me what not to do. Additionally, I learned some of my work ethic from my father, a successful attorney, who taught me to really focus when working to be truly productive. My bachelor’s degree is in leadership and management, and I have read almost every leadership book written over the years, so a lot of credit goes to authors like John Maxwell, Simon Sinek, Stephen Covey, Patrick Lencioni, and many others.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Like many others, I had a dysfunctional family and a troubled childhood. I was raised by a single mom who struggled with depression. Her death from an overdose was probably the most defining wound of my life. I healed by, eventually, opening up about it, getting grief counseling, and then leveraging that pain to inspire me to help others. Without adversity in life, we can’t develop resilience and grit.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A project that I am committed to for the rest of my life is working to make mental health and addiction care possible for veterans and folks who lack resources. My nonprofit CarePossible has provided nearly $6 million in services to veterans, military family members, and low-income families over the past 12 years, and I’d like to think that we are just getting started!

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I pray and meditate daily, and that is when I feel most at peace. I also feel at peace when spending time with my wife, Kim, our family, and my closest friends. Interestingly, I often feel at peace during counseling and coaching sessions because I love helping people grow and heal. Finally, as a lifelong martial artist, it may sound counterintuitive, but I feel at peace when rolling on the mats or sparring.
