Daily Inspiration: Meet Ziyan Yang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziyan Yang

Hi Ziyan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my artistic journey as a classical music composer but discovered my passion for opera and musical theater. This led me to dedicate my career to storytelling through music. Live theater has been a constant source of inspiration for me, and while I’m still in the early stages of my career, I strive to expand my work from music to drama, not only as a composer but also as a playwright. I dream of writing screenplays in the future as well. What I love most about storytelling is how it mirrors our world and allows us to convey important messages. My works have been performed not only in New York City but also nationally, in places like Los Angeles and Detroit. My dream is to continue writing stories that resonate with my experiences, such as being queer and Asian. If my work can move even one person, it has value and reflects the world around us.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Doubts inevitably arise every day, such as questioning what stories resonate with people and whether they hold personal significance. I worry about whether something I love will go unrecognized by others or how to stay true to my beliefs when facing tough critiques. Creativity often means dealing with challenges, but confronting these issues keeps our minds fresh. Overthinking can sometimes harm our work, yet it’s difficult to avoid, and it’s natural to become protective of our creations. We need to strike a balance between our internal vision and the outside world, as well as between artistic integrity and market demands.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a composer and playwright, I aim to bridge the worlds of music and drama, as these two art forms enhance one another and create a more engaging experience for audiences. The key to success in this field is telling compelling stories through music while keeping the audience engaged. I enjoy and aspire to be part of the vibrant scene, from the Metropolitan Opera House to Broadway theaters, where nightly magic touches countless people. The greatest challenge I face is balancing genres—questioning why musicals can’t be operatic or why operas must always be serious. I believe art exists on a spectrum that connects different forms, and my goal is to blend them seamlessly rather than divide them. This is the essence of contemporary art today.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love learning about people’s stories from different cultural backgrounds. In this country, we all have roots that span diverse worlds, yet our shared humanity unites us. I enjoy exploring the common ground with others when collaborating, seeking the key elements that we share. This connection can resonate deeply, especially among people of color, as we navigate both positive and challenging experiences. When working with others, I prioritize clear communication about each person’s role to ensure smooth collaboration. Ultimately, it’s about building trust and maintaining professionalism.
