Daily Inspiration: Meet Young Contra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Young Contra

Hi Young Contra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Journey Through Sound and Survival

Young Contra, a multifaceted recording artist and producer, draws his influence from a rich blend of cultural and personal experiences. Born to an American mother and a Jamaican father, his upbringing spans the West Adams District of Los Angeles, CA, and the Southside of Kingston, Jamaica. These dual roots have given him a unique perspective, shaping the music that is now gaining attention across the industry.

Growing up in Los Angeles came with its share of challenges. His mother, who has courageously battled addiction and is now eight years clean, and his father, who was incarcerated for much of Young Contra’s childhood and passed away in 2015, were both significant figures in his life, though often from a distance. As a result, Young Contra was primarily raised by his grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. Being the oldest boy among nine siblings on his father’s side and the only child of his mother, he had to shoulder responsibilities early on.

Music was a constant in his life from a young age. Influenced by the older kids in his neighborhood, Young Contra found himself captivated by the sounds and rhythms of the 90s, spending hours watching music videos that sparked his creative curiosity. His journey into music production began modestly—with a keyboard and a couple of software programs, Acid and Reason, that friends had left behind while they went off to college. From these humble beginnings, Young Contra developed a natural ear for music, quickly advancing from creating beats to penning rhymes in his notebook.

Initially, he kept his lyrical talents to himself, unsure of how they would be received. But once he took the leap and recorded his verses, his friends were quick to recognize his potential, encouraging him to pursue rapping seriously. This encouragement has paid off; today, Young Contra is not only a rising recording artist but also a sought-after producer. He has collaborated with notable artists like Fenix Flexin, Mann, Fat-Ron, R@mbo, and Black in the Trap. On the production side, his work includes collaborations with heavyweights such as 03Greedo, DC Trill, Babyface E, and RMC Mike.

Young Contra’s dual talents as a rapper and producer have become his hallmark. His latest project, *My Way or the Highway*, is a testament to his versatility and creative vision. The album, which he largely self-produced, is a bold statement within the Los Angeles music scene. It showcases a diverse mix of sounds and styles, with standout contributions from producers like FknSicxo, Moneey, MaddMaxx4800, and Gutta Boy Dirt. The album also features collaborations with artists such as Black in the Trap, 5mil, Moneey, and Naya Bugatti, balancing energetic tracks with more introspective moments.

Available on all major platforms, *My Way or the Highway* is a powerful showcase of Young Contra’s talent, marking him as a rising star to watch in the industry. His distinctive voice, powerful lyrics, and innovative beats continue to carve out a unique space for him in the ever-evolving landscape of music.
