Yennefer Fang

Hi Yennefer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey. My love for the cinematic arts and storytelling was sparked at a very young age, but it truly crystallized at 16 when I recognized my passion for influencing culture through media.

My journey began in China, directing shows that centered around female empowerment. These experiences were fundamental; they shaped my understanding of the power of narrative and film. As I delved into filmmaking and production, my commitment to telling untold stories, especially those of LGBTQIA individuals, solidified.

Moving to the United States marked a significant pivot in my career. I had the privilege of contributing to several film projects, advocating for and representing LGBTQIA groups, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

This desire culminated in my most recent work, ‘A Day of Trans’. This short documentary holds a special place in my heart as it portrays the lived realities of Chinese transgender individuals across different ages. It was an intimate project, and the goal was to shine a light on the diversity and resilience of the trans community in the face of societal challenges.

The film’s release was timed with the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that we honor and remember those we’ve lost to anti-transgender violence. It’s not just a film; it’s a message, an act of remembrance, and a call to action.

In Hollywood, my experience broadened as an Assistant Producer on ‘Swimming’. Meanwhile, I became increasingly involved in movements advocating for the representation of Asian American and minority women in the industry. It’s a personal cause for me, one that’s about opening doors for stories that mirror the diversity of human experience.

My journey brought me to Los Angeles, a city synonymous not only with the glitz and glamour of the film industry but also with a progressive spirit that provides platforms for voices like mine. In LA, there’s a community that celebrates diversity, and being here has given me the opportunity to shine, both as a filmmaker and as an individual.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road I’ve traveled has been anything but smooth, yet each obstacle has been a valuable lesson that has shaped the filmmaker and activist I am today. Being transgender in the film industry presents its unique set of challenges. There’s a labyrinth of stereotypes in Hollywood, and these often make it difficult to find opportunities that allow for authentic representation.

My early days in China added layers of complexity. Transgenderism is not widely accepted, and this societal reluctance spills over into the entertainment industry. Coupled with the patriarchal undertones, being a woman, and more so a transgender woman, comes with systemic barriers that are deeply rooted and hard to navigate.

Despite these challenges, the biggest hurdle I face today is creating films that are not only true to the LGBTQ+ narrative but are also commercially viable. My vision extends beyond the niche – I want to craft stories that resonate on a global scale that break into the mainstream without compromising their authenticity. The balance of honoring our truths while making them accessible to a wider audience is a challenge I’m still navigating. It’s a tightrope walk between creative integrity and commercial appeal, but one that I’m committed to mastering. Because ultimately, it’s not just about making films; it’s about changing the fabric of the industry to reflect the diversity of the human experience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a storyteller at heart, a filmmaker by profession, and an advocate by calling. My work primarily revolves around creating documentaries and films that bring the untold stories of the LGBTQ+ community to the forefront of global consciousness. I specialize in delving into the nuanced, often untold experiences of transgender individuals – a narrative I hold very close to my heart.

The work I’m most known for and deeply proud of, is my documentary ‘A Day of Trans’. This project was no mean feat. It meant navigating and challenging a cultural landscape where sentiments around LGBTQ+ identities are not just stigmatizing but also mired in regulatory restrictions that limit the expression of ‘effeminate’ aesthetics and gender ideals. This film played a pivotal role in catalyzing a shift from marginalization to milestones for China’s transgender community. It presented a raw, unfiltered look at the lives of trans individuals spanning three generations, highlighting their struggles with societal injustice, disownment, and the labyrinth of healthcare challenges they face.

As one of the first and only openly transgender filmmakers from China, I carry a unique responsibility and honor. My deep-seated understanding of transgender issues and the broader spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community allows me to tell stories not just from a minority perspective but with a depth of empathy and authenticity that’s hard to replicate.

What sets me apart is my approach to storytelling. While my narratives are unapologetically rooted in the minority experience, my goal is never polarization. Instead, I seek to bridge conversations, to find a common ground where understanding and humanity can flourish amidst diversity. I believe in the power of film as a medium to foster dialogue, to soften hearts, and to illuminate minds. It’s about creating a different future – one where being trans is not a day of struggle but a new day of being and acceptance.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Absolutely, my creative and advocacy work is fueled by a diverse array of resources that inspire and educate me. For me, a significant source of inspiration has been ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’. This show has been a beacon of light, not just in entertainment but in embodying the triumph of individuality and expression. It illustrates the heights that individuals from our community can reach and the profound impact we can have when given a platform to shine.

In terms of podcasts, ‘What the Trans’ has been an invaluable addition to my weekly routine. This UK-based podcast cuts through the noise with incisive commentary and crucial fact-checking on transgender and non-binary issues, all delivered with a good dose of snark. It’s refreshingly authentic and combats the ‘cis-nonsense’ we often see in the media with wit and wisdom, making it a brilliant resource for both information and inspiration.

As a transgender woman, I have a vested interest in feminism and the myriad of issues that women face in society. Understanding and advocating for these issues is not just a part of my identity; it’s an essential facet of my work and activism.

To deepen my understanding of women’s experiences and feminism, I turn to voices like those on the ‘Wiser Than Me’ podcast hosted by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Hearing inspiring stories from icons such as Jane Fonda, Carol Burnett, Amy Tan, Diane von Furstenberg, Isabel Allende, and Fran Lebowitz is incredibly enlightening. These conversations are more than just interviews; they’re masterclasses in how to lead a full and meaningful life against the constraints society often imposes based on gender.

This podcast, along with the works of feminist authors and thinkers, helps me to weave the complexities of womanhood into my narratives, ensuring that the stories I tell are rich with perspective and depth. It’s also a reminder that, whether in front of or behind the camera, the experiences of women, including those who are transgender like myself, are multifaceted and deeply interconnected with the broader fight for equality.

In a world often dictated by binary views, these resources empower me to challenge the status quo and create art that reflects the true spectrum of who we are. They remind me that my voice is needed that my stories matter, and they continually fuel my dedication to creating a more equitable society through film.
