Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmine Tanres.
Hi Yasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began on the bustling streets of London, where I cut my teeth as a multimedia journalist at London360, the U.K.’s first youth-led news show in partnership with the BBC, Sky News, and Charter Communications. There, I mastered the art of storytelling—learning to pitch, write, interview everyone, from celebrities to politicians, and edit features ready for television broadcasting. After the show’s season ended, I pursued Entertainment Studies at UCLA, expanding my horizons into the US. Upon graduation, I was sponsored by Long Beach Local News and became their lead news anchor while reporting on red carpets for digital entertainment platforms. Fast forward to today, and I now proudly lead and co-produce ‘A Look into Our America’ on Chime TV, a groundbreaking show celebrating marginalized voices and dispelling stereotypes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My foray into news and entertainment has been a dynamic mix of triumphs and challenges, far from a smooth road. Starting as a multimedia journalist in London, I faced the initial hurdles breaking into the industry and mastering the diverse skill set required for news production. Without a background in journalism and instead a Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages, I was thrown into the deep end of packaging news features at a fast turnaround time.
Transitioning to Los Angeles brought its own set of challenges, including adapting to a new cultural and professional landscape. First and foremost, the anxiously inducing process of obtaining a visa demanded thorough documentation and legal intricacies, requiring extensive time and effort. Without the invaluable support of my family, friends, and key figures within the industry vouching for my credentials, the hurdles of obtaining the necessary approvals would have been even more of a struggle. So, I’m immensely grateful to the people that have been rooting for me all the way in my life.
Once I was able to break into the industry in Los Angeles and begin to establish myself, juggling multiple roles simultaneously, such as covering breaking news at Long Beach Local News and at the same time reporting on red carpet events for a variety of digital entertainment platforms, brought about its own set of demands. Balancing these responsibilities required relentless dedication and time management. Today, I still face this as I produce and host ‘A Look into our America,’ as well as cover red carpet events and any other one-time gigs, such as emcee work. I’ve had to learn how to best live my life, all the while preserving my energy to honor the performance that is required of me.
The entertainment industry is highly competitive, and breaking through calls for resilience, trust in the process, and a commitment to the craft. So, facing rejection or being forced to flexibly adapt to the changes that may occur at the last minute can be, at times frustrating, but it adds grit in your favor. Once you’re in the flow, the creativity and expression that comes along with it is truly gratifying and be-freeing. It just may take a little time to get to where you imagine and also that saying of ‘right time, right place’.
Another noteworthy challenge is navigating the complexities of being in the spotlight, particularly when I made an appearance on the Netflix reality series Bling Empire. While it brought visibility, it also came with the need to manage public perception and uphold authenticity. Despite these obstacles, each challenge became an opportunity for growth, pushing me to evolve both personally and professionally. I deeply appreciate the opportunities that I have had, even those that may have not been the most aligned choices, as they have each contributed toward my expansion and deeper awareness of how I wish to show up in the world.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As mentioned before, I co-produce and host ‘A Look into Our America’ for Chime TV, the first and only English-language Asian Entertainment cable network in America. This 30-minute news and entertainment magazine-style show focuses on elevating the narratives and voices of ANHPI individuals. My role involves sourcing, pitching, and booking guests, researching and preparing interviews, compiling shot lists, executing on-location interviews, and overseeing the editing and creation of compelling stories. Additionally, I actively engage in creating social media assets to amplify our impact across various platforms.
In parallel, I’ve been a key player in the launch of Golden TV, the first streaming platform that combines API creators, content, and talent. Serving as part of this dynamic incubator, my commitment aligns with the platform’s mission to foster collaboration across API communities globally, developing and delivering original content. Golden TV, along with the newly merged and highly established Character Media, is set to revolutionize the streaming experience, providing a space for historically siloed stakeholders to connect and introduce fresh, authentic, and diverse content.
Moreover, my engagement in the fashion world as a live host for a B2B platform and as an emcee for prestigious events such as the American Advertising Awards, Asian Fashion Week Show, Supermodel Search Competition, and Mrs. European Universe adds another layer to my diverse skill set. I suppose what sets me apart is my multi-cultural background (Spanish and Asian) with a British accent and multi-lingual skills (English, German, Spanish, and a bit of French), as well as my experiences in presenting a variety of subject matters, enabling me to speak with different personalities for a wide range of audiences.
For my contributions as a live and on-air host, as well as my dedication to elevating the AANHPI community, I have had the deepest honor to be awarded by the City of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as a ‘Top Face of Hollywood’ in 2023. This acknowledgment for my career is one of my proudest moments thus far, as it represents all the hard work and my devotion to sharing my voice through the empowerment of the brilliant people that I get to speak with and spotlight through the means of media. It is my greatest gift and privilege to have the chance of being a driving force for engaging entertaining and thought-provoking conversations. Wherever I am called for I wish to continuously fulfill this duty with grace and sincerity.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m a strong believer in creating your own luck and following your inner guide (intuition) even if it feels like the biggest risk, but so aligned. The uncertainty that lies therein produces unexpected magical outcomes. So, I strongly recommend to never stop pursuing what feels right, and to surround yourself with people that genuinely have your best interests at heart!
