Daily Inspiration: Meet Xiaohan Chang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaohan Chang

Hi Xiaohan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for photography started with my father, with my parents’ support, I had the chance to develop my skills early on. At university, I was the president of the photography club, which gave me opportunities to exhibit and publish my work. After graduating, I had stable job offers, but I wanted to focus on creative pursuits, so I chose to study further in New York. With the help of friends and professors, I gained opportunities in magazines and exhibitions, and today, I’m a fashion photographer, committed to creating meaningful work.
As fashion photography is a unique blend of creativity and commerce. Finding the balance between the two has always been something I strive to achieve. I once attended a lecture where I met Nan Goldin, the pioneer of personal photography. At 73, she is still actively creating, which further solidified my belief in pursuing photography as a lifelong career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, it’s been a relatively smooth journey. Of course, I’ve encountered various challenges along the way, like models canceling last minute, not being able to borrow the designs I wanted, or working with limited budgets. But none of these obstacles have discouraged me. I always find ways to overcome them and keep moving forward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily identify as a fashion photographer, but I also manage live stream operations and work as a recruiter. My work has been featured in prominent publications like VOGUE, where pieces such as ‘Epidemic Era’ and ‘A Family’ were showcased. Other works, like ‘Alison,’ were published in SELIN magazine, and my series ‘Nature Silence’ appeared in FARN Magazine. I’ve also had my work ‘Children’s Play’ exhibited at the Pingyao International Photography Exhibition.

In addition, I’ve been recognized as an Excellent Graduate from Xi’an International University, and my microfilm ‘Heart Lamp’ won second prize in a national competition. One of my proudest moments was receiving the Excellent Work award for my piece ‘Night Chang’An’ at the Fifth Silk Road International Art Festival.

What sets me apart is my versatility, balancing creativity in fashion photography with other roles, while constantly striving to tell compelling stories through my work.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Creative freedom is everything to me because I have so much I want to express. I need a platform, a space where I can fully share my ideas and communicate with the audience. That environment where I can create freely is vital to me. It’s not just about the work, but about the exchange between the creator and the viewer. Long live creativity!
