Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Kimani.
Hi Victoria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started like most creatives, at home or in church. Started writing poetry & songs early on. Songwriting was my entry into the music business, which allowed me to travel from LA to ATL to London and eventually to my homeland Kenya where my career as a recording artist began, between 2014-2021, I released 4 Afropop Albums while in the African continent (specifically, Kenya, Nigeria & South Africa) those album names are Safari, Afropolitan, Afreaka & Spirit Animal.
During this time I cultivated my sound and what it means to be a first-generation American to immigrant African parents …. I moved back to LA in July 2021 to work on my 5th Album, the timing is cool because now there’s space for the Afropop genre in the US and that fusion is exactly what I’m bringing to the table on my 5th album.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many obstacles, from language barriers to cultural differences, being misunderstood, stereotyped, pre-judged, haters, and many many more! But everything that I have endured has truly built my Character & somehow made me more self-aware and coincidentally made me a better Artist.
I took a year off to rebrand, take care of my mental health, and recover from the trauma that comes with being a public figure, with over a million followers on socials, there are bound to be several thousand of them sending you bad vibes …. I had to learn to ignore and keep moving. There will always be challenges and things to overcome! But I guess that’s what makes this journey exciting.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an AfroPop recording artist, I specialize in Vibes. I’m most proud of my 4 independent albums 1.) Safari 2.) Afropolitan 3.) Afrika 4.) Spirit Animal. What sets me apart is my sound, The fusion of AfroPop & R&B is a total vibe….
I started creating this sound at a time when it wasn’t completely understood or supported, but to see how the Same sound is globally being accepted is So cool!! I’m kind of obsessed with being early and doing things first!
Who else deserves credit for your story?
I have had mentors & supporters! Shout out to the OSG!
