Daily Inspiration: Meet Tyler Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Jordan.

Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I’m Tyler Jordan, the founder of C.A.N.V.A.S (Creating A New View Around Society). I started my brand in 2013 to add value to creative culture through my clothing designs and photography.

As a self-taught photographer, I have an impressive body of work that has been featured in art exhibitions at Miami Art Basel, NFT NYC, The Village Voice, and Complex. I bring my unique eye for design and creativity to each piece of clothing that I produce, striving to capture the edginess and style of 1980s NYC in a minimalistic fashion on high-quality garments. Each piece is embroidered with fluorescent embroidery thread and features a U.V reactive hidden reveal, making them both stylish and eye-catching.

Through C.A.N.V.A.S, I have developed partnerships with other brands, including Wolf and Badger, who hosted the release of my “Knew York” collection in their Soho location in NYC, as well as in West Hollywood, CA. My passion for creative culture is evident in everything I do, and my brand is a true reflection of my dedication to bringing fresh, innovative ideas to the world of fashion and photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Not entirely. One of the main struggles I faced was the lack of resources and visibility when starting my brand. It was challenging to get my brand off the ground without a lot of financial backing or industry connections. I had to learn how to do a lot of things on my own, from designing and producing clothing to marketing and promoting my brand.

Another struggle was getting visibility for my work. As an independent artist, it can be tough to get noticed in a crowded industry. However, I persevered and continued to produce high-quality work and share it on social media and other platforms. Over time, I was able to build a following and develop relationships with other brands and influencers in the industry.

Despite these challenges, I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish with C.A.N.V.A.S. I believe that the struggles I faced have made me a stronger and more resilient artist and entrepreneur.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer that specializes in clothing design. In terms of clothing design, I specialize in creating high-quality garments that embody the edginess and style of 1980s NYC in a minimalistic fashion. Each piece is meticulously embroidered with fluorescent thread and features a hidden UV-reactive element, making them both stylish and eye-catching.

What sets me apart from others is my ability to combine my unique perspective as a self-taught photographer with my passion for design. I bring a fresh and authentic approach to each garment I produce, and I take pride in creating pieces that truly stand out.

What I’m most proud of is building C.A.N.V.A.S from the ground up and seeing it grow into a brand that has captured the attention of both local and international audiences. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people wearing my clothing designs and knowing that I’m contributing something positive to the creative community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has played a significant role in my life and business. I believe that I was lucky to have stumbled upon my passion for photography while working with the MTA, which ultimately led me to launch my own gallery and brand. It was luck that put me in the right place at the right time and in many of my experiences was the deciding factor between success and failure.

On the other hand, I’ve also faced some bad luck along the way. Many of my exhibitions was postponed due to the pandemic, and I’ve had to pivot my business strategies to adapt to the new normal. However, I believe that luck is only one factor in success, and it’s up to me to continue to work hard and persevere through any obstacles that may come my way.
