Hi Tee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the face behind Serendripity Studios, a Permanent Makeup and Tattoo Studio. This journey began in 2018 when I took my very first Microblade and Lip Blush PMU Training. During the time I was still in college pursuing my BA in Psychology, but also needed a creative side hustle. To be frank, college was a difficult time for me, juggling a job and school. It may have to do with the fact that it was not my dream to begin with -I was living my parent’s dream.
Every immigrant parent who came to the States for their families future had one goal in mind for their kids. Go to school, make your parents proud and get an office job or become a health care professional. But this was not my dream. I was living my parent’s dream. It was extremely exhausting and unfulfilling. It felt like I was running in circles and never getting anywhere in life.
Not long after my first PMU training, I made a risky move and bet on myself. Spring of 2019, I announced to my parents that I was going to quit school and pursue my own beauty business. Shockingly, they gave me their support and blessing. This was the beginning of something truly magical for me. To have your parents support your vision was a huge advantage for my well-being which was important for what is to come – the trials and tribulations of starting a small business.
So in Fall of 2019, I immersed myself in my 9-5 in healthcare to financially support myself while I continued my education in Cosmetic Tattoos. During this time, I took numerous trainings for different services and began taking in models to build my portfolio, furthering my skill set. By the start of the pandemic in 2020, I saw a lightbulb go off in my vision. This was a pinnacle moment for me and for many other small businesses as well.
The skillset built were recession-proof, and I deemed myself lucky. In the heart of the pandemic, I was still able to keep my job in healthcare as we were deemed necessary. During this time, I took the chance to build my small business offering beauty services to those who couldn’t go to the salon to get their brows or lips done. I would work weekdays in the lab and weekends at my home studio, adding up to 40-60 hour weeks to build the lifestyle that I knew was meant for me.
Fast forward three years later, Serendripity Studios and Academy emerged. We are a full-time Permanent Makeup Clinic offering services like Ombre Powder, Lip Blush, Microneedling, Hyaluron Pen Lip FIllers, Tiny Tattoos, and we also offer 1:1 Certification Training to other women who want to build a skillset + knowledge to build their own business.
I am also proud to say that I am one of 60 artists internationally hand-picked to be a part of the Tina Davies Pro Team 2023. Anyone who is in the PMU Industry may have heard of Tina Davies or her products. She is the pinnacle of the PMU Industry and the woman who coined the term “Microblade”. She is an innovative leader and a spokesperson for our industry & continues creating more products to support her vision to make PMU mainstream. It is an honor to be a part of her team, a movement to spread knowledge and the love for the art of PMU.
This is my story, and how I got to where I am today was no easy feat. However, I’m not going to talk about how hard and tough and lonely life got, But I will say, for any of you who is willing to bet on yourself and your vision, you must take that risk in order to make it come to life, in order to have an intentional lifestyle of financial freedom and creativity.
Playing in the safe zone will never reward you to a degree that will set you free. Are you ready for it?
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like any journey, there has got to be a few bumps in the road. The first year I began my journey, I sacrificed my mental and physical health, working myself to nearly exhaustion. I was so eager and it was a very busy year so I could afford to rest or take days off. My second year, my finances took a plunge when I had to dip into my savings to rent my own salon studio. It was a risk I was willing to take to grow my small business. For anyone who is thinking about starting your own business, keep in mind that sometimes the first few years are the roughest, mentally, financially, spiritually and physically -but that comes with the territory because the return is such an incredible experience. The amount of growth and connection that emerges from your sacrifice is well worth it. As long as you wholeheartedly believe that it all works out in the end. As long as you stay in your lane, and be better every single day, then eventually, it will play out to your best interest, no matter what.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in the art of cosmetic tattoos, otherwise known as Permanent Make up, which takes traditional practices of body tattoos and combines it with science and technology to create seamless, natural tattooed form on makeup to enhance people’s features.
My specialties are in Lip Blush Tattoo and Ombre Powder Brow Tattoo, which enhances one’s facial features giving them a natural makeup look but you can’t tell that it is a tattoo. My technique is designed to allow my clients to feel refreshed waking up, looking ready to take on their day without having to spend hours getting ready. The services I provide in truly life-changing for my clients. They save time, they look ready to go at all times of the day and their confidence skyrockets with every session they book with me.
Not only do my clients thank me for adding value back to their beauty but my students also thank me for showing them another avenue to build their careers around Permanent Makeup. On top of the services provided at the clinic, we also offer Certification Training for other individuals who want to earn more money and gain a skillset that they can take essentially everywhere with them, as long as they have their two hands.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think I owe a few traits to my success.
First off, it’s having a strong belief that every obstacle is actually an opportunity waiting to be discovered. To have a growth mindset does not only mean having a forward-thinking mindset. It means to start from the ground up and cover all bases, all the while still pushing through every mistake, every obstacle and struggle. That is such an important virtue to have while you knocked down.
Another thing is to have gratitude during the journey, not comparing yourself to other people’s journeys. Jealousy and envy is a natural human conditions, but we must fight it in order to grow. Self-comparison is my biggest enemy when I first began, but now I find inspiration and motivation in seeing other people’s success. There is room for everyone to win at the table!
Lastly, discipline and consistency. Discipline is showing up for yourself and for your community, even on the days where you don’t feel the best, not because you have to, but because you get to. It is a blessing that you get to do this thing called life, and to disregard that would be placing you at a disadvantage. Discipline to me is knowing that if I show up and do this, my future self would be so proud and I would thank myself for not taking the easy route, for not choosing complacency. Consistency, combined with discipline, is the perfect method for success. When you hear discipline, you think of hard & tough choices, right? If you combine that with consistency, then it alleviates the hard/ tough part. Consistency breeds good habits and a healthy, happy lifestyle. This is the perfect equation to anyone’s happiness and success.
