Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Schafer.
Hi Tara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a student of astrology. When I was younger, my Mother, had all of these old astrology books. This was many years ago, when you had to calculate charts by hand. Long before astrology software was available. I would sit and read those books for hours. However, I kept this fascination in secrecy. (Didn’t want the other kids to think I was weird… which they did anyhow.) Fast forward many years, I definitely had the entrepreneurial bug. I’ve sold rocks (as a kid. Had to return everyone’s allowance because apparently magical rocks are not a real thing!), owned a brick-and-mortar coffee shop, made and sold corsets… you get the idea. Eventually, I found myself self-employed, and dare I say empowered, by apprenticing as a Professional Dominatrix. (That’s a story all on it’s own! And no, it’s not at all what you or Hollywood would imagine or portray it to be!) I started running the charts of my clients and began noticing patterns. This is when I was reminded of my love of astrology. I Kept this idea of Erotic Astrology in the shadows for a long time. My first online business was selling luxury fetish lingerie. But astrology kept creeping back into my life and business always. After many “nudges” from The Universe, I said, “OK! I get it!” I completely pivoted in my business. Meanwhile, I was constantly getting asked to share my knowledge of business with others. That’s when it dawned on me to combine astrology and business. A blending of the “woo” with the work, so to speak. I fully came out of the “broomstick” closet. Now I offer business coaching weaved in with business astrology. It has been a wild ride! I find that it a more fluid and uniquely energetic way of doing business. Of course, there’s still strategy and systems involved. But using astrology in conjunction with practical business strategies, adds another in depth layer to the full picture.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This has not been a smooth ride! It’s been a journey of self discovery. Learning to embrace my quirkiness and be confident sharing things that might be considered strange, odd or even taboo. It’s taken me a long time to even say confidently that I am an astrologer. But over the past 5 years, I’ve grown very comfortable with my title of a business coach and astrologer. I love the idea that me being able to embrace myself, helps others to do the same and go after their dreams.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help other creatives to find their calling in life. That “thing” that gets them excited to do the work. The entire process is not just business, not just strategy, but a complete “getting to know yourself” fully. It’s about mind, body, and soulful business. I mostly work with women and a few brave men that are willing to go on the journey of creating and starting a business that is fulfilling to them. My specialty is being able to create space for them. Then explain the unique energetics of their personal and business astrology charts to show them where their strengths lie. I’m known for being able to break all of this into step-by-step instructions, unique to each individual. Giving them permission to go after, and perhaps do the “things” they have always wanted. But were maybe a bit afraid to. Astrology is a blueprint of what you’re capable of, what lights you up, what deep shadow work you might need to do, what business model energetically works for you, and even what products and services will feel most easy for you. It can even show you what entices you sensually to help to create that full mind, body and soulful business experience. Understanding and decoding your birth chart is like, waking up one morning and looking in the mirror only to see a different version of yourself. “Oh… there you are!” I’m most proud of the fact that I have completely embraced my “ODD-ness”. That I’ve been able to finally tell my story of going from Dominatrix to Business Savvy/no nonsense/tell it like it is/ practical/ tech savvy/ business coach and business astrologer, that’s helps you to step into the power of YOU…. All of you.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe it’s so important to find a mentor(s) in your life. These are the people that will tell it you straight. You want someone that is a few steps ahead of where you want to be in life. But also someone that will be open and honest about the experiences they have had and tell you when something might not be a good idea. Think of your mentors like finding an AA sponsor. You know you need one but you might not always like what they have to say. What has worked for me is finding that person that can give me that tough love, but that I also respect as a person due to leading by example.
