Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Horton.
Hi Tammy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found a love for photography in college when I was required to take a Photo 101 course. From the first class, I was hooked and immediately changed my major. Once I graduated college with a BFA, I packed my bags and headed west to Los Angeles. After working in the television industry for a few years I decided to revisit photography again. I started out shooting for a wedding photography studio and quickly found my purpose of capturing decisive moments and telling a story. That was 20 years ago, and I haven’t looked back.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has mostly been a smooth road. I’m very grateful for all the people who have supported me along the way. The love and encouragement have been immense from friends, colleagues, and clients. It’s kept me going and fills my heart. With that said, it hasn’t been seamless. I don’t think starting a business ever is. There’s always a learning curve but it’s been an exciting ride, and I wouldn’t change anything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a wedding and elopement photographer based in Northern California, and I shoot worldwide. My style is more focused on capturing real candid emotion, letting the day unfold naturally, and staying true to who my clients are. Connection drives me more than a curated pose. I find beauty in the perfectly imperfect. But ultimately, my goal is for my couples to get their photos back and be reminded exactly of how the day felt. If my photos take you back to that moment and evoke emotion, then I’ve done my job. And one thing I’m most proud of is my ability to make my couples feel comfortable. It’s not every day you have your picture taken, and it stresses many people out. But if you’re able to have fun and truly just be yourself, you’ll look great in your photos. I love that I can bring that out in my couples, and they always walk away saying, “That was so fun and so easy!”
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I shot all over California, and I love the diverse coastline, urban landscapes of the cities, and the creative and vibrant souls that live here.
