Daily Inspiration: Meet Stephanie Amaro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Amaro

Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a musician and a performer by trade my entire adult life. I started playing piano when I was 12, and guitar when I was 14. In highschool I played with mostly punk and rock bands but when I was around 19 I became hyperfocused on learning mariachi style guitar, which led me to learning to sing in Spanish as well. The better I got at it, the more work in that field came my way until I was able to support myself playing mariachi music. I made musical connections along the way that allow me to do recordings, tours, and collaborations with bigger artists now and I’m very grateful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth sailing all the time. I struggled financially during slow seasons when I was starting out, before I built up my network. I was also in a pretty successful band for many years that had a ton of internal conflicts, from personality clashes to differences in goals, to money management. I definitely learned a lot from that. My biggest struggle however has been not having the support of my family in this career. I’ve been nominated for a Grammy and have names like Lady GaGa and Cyndi Lauper on my resume but I still get messages like “you should drive for Uber” and links to part time office jobs. I literally have no other job skills besides music, dance, and entertainment so at this point I just have to laugh and ignore them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a budding solo artist now, after spending many years in the music industry gaining experience and making connections. I’ve been a studio guitar player, backup vocalist, vocal coach, part of a semi successful original band (the group was nominated for best ranchero album at the 2012 Latin Grammys), and mariachi weekend warrior. Now I’m focused on putting my experiences together in a creative way and releasing my first solo project. There are so many amazing artists and vocalists out there, but one thing that sets me apart is my deep consideration for lyrical interpretation and emotional connection.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Los Angeles is where I was born and raised, and I’m grateful for that because there could be no better school for a born entertainer like myself. Well, it’s been more like boot camp. I love LA’s rich and diverse cultural canvas the most, and of course the gorgeous weather. If I could change anything about it though, I’d improve our public transportation system. I really dislike how Angelinos have to be so reliant on cars.
