Today we’d like to introduce you to Sisi Chen
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in the United States began during my high school years, a period where I continued to nurture my passion for painting and drawing. After gaining acceptance to UC Irvine as an undeclared major, my initial plan was to transfer into a business program, following the path of my family members, who are all businessmen. However, everything changed when I took an art class as part of my General Education curriculum. It was during this class that I was introduced to the world of contemporary art. I was fascinated by how artists challenge conventions and raise thought-provoking questions through their work, igniting a deep passion in me. After completing my bachelor’s degree of fine art in photography and digital art, I had the opportunity to intern in an art museum in China. This experience showed me the reality of the professional art industry and made me realize that the idealistic art world I had imagined was different from reality. It was during this time that I developed an interest in graphic design, which combines both business and artistic elements. I am drawn to the ability to visually communicate ideas and create impactful designs that resonate with an audience. Right now, I’m moving toward my thesis year, which is my last year toward graduation in the ArtCenter MFA graphic design program.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t struggle much during the design process because I am always optimistic and energetic about my projects. However, once I complete a project, my confidence often wanes, and self-doubt sets in. I find myself questioning whether my design is the best solution or if someone else could have done it better. While I believe this self-doubt and lack of confidence will diminish as my design skills and experience grow, it remains a challenge I currently face.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently an MFA candidate at ArtCenter, specializing in brand identity and visual systems, which include packaging, motion, and publication design. I have worked on various identity projects in different areas, such as exhibition identities related to installation art and corporate rebrands like AirTrain and AMC. In addition to school projects, I had the opportunity to intern at 8Rue, a brand agency in LA, where I worked with real clients and designed for startup brands.
Because of my art background, there are no limitations on the tools I use in design. Recently, I have been incorporating code into my visual system designs. While this is new to me for design purposes, it feels familiar since I have previously created interactive art pieces with code.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is finding a balance between working as a designer and living a healthy life. It’s true that art school often demands late nights and sleepless hours. I’ve been devoting all my time to being a graphic designer, leaving little room to enjoy life. Recently, I’ve started to work out more and explore Los Angeles, visiting museums, galleries, and vintage stores. I believe that balancing work and life can enhance my creativity and improve my designs. This balance allows me to bring fresh perspectives and energy to every project I undertake.
