Daily Inspiration: Meet Sinclair The Vandal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sinclair The Vandal. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is a smooth road. I’ve experienced my ups and downs, especially in the gallery world. Growing up in NYC during the Graffiti and street boom of the ’70s and ’80s wasn’t always accepted, even to this day. I started out doing abstract paintings because much of where I live in Florida now is very conservative, and urban-style artworks aren’t as popular as they are in other areas and states. This allowed me to be more accepted in galleries here locally. But it also led me to bigger opportunities, and I was able to branch out to higher-end galleries and art fairs across the country. Once I made a name for myself with my Abstract works, I was freed up to incorporate my graffiti and street art roots which ultimately led to my current style.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I specialize in is abstract graffiti/street-inspired canvas works. It has allowed me to stand out from the crowd in the gallery scene. I am best known for my font-based collage artworks. I am most proud of being able to cross into the legitimate art world with what I do. We’ve seen a huge increase of people who think they can become an overnight art success since the Covid pandemic, and through that influx of others chasing, I have still been able to hold my own because of my authenticity, my story, my beginnings, and my history.

How do you define success?
I truly define success as being happy doing what you love to do and being able to create is my success, I enjoy that others enjoy my works whether or not it’s sold whether it’s sitting in storage as long as I enjoyed creating it that’s where I find my success. Success it’s not monetarily, I know plenty of wealthy artists that are not happy people and if you’re not happy how could you possibly be. I create for me I enjoy the process and being proud of the end result. My paintings often have the word fame written somewhere on them, and it’s kind of a spoof because so many get into this business seeking Insta fame and not because they enjoy creating something.
